Unit of Study: To infinity and beyond!

Brief Description: This science unit of study explores theories regarding the formation and nature of the universe, galaxies, stars and stellar systems, including our own solar system. It will also examine the structure of our own planet in further detail. Students will explore various theories that, at this time, seem most likely to be true, or at least provide explanations for much that we have been able to observe. They consider the role of dark matter and energy in the universe, super novae and black holes. Students will delve into the geological history of Earth and the conditions that allowed life to arise on our planet. They will examine the forces and major events that continue to shape the planet, explore the composition of the Earth’s crust, and learn about global systems and predictable phenomena including the water and carbon cycle, seasons and eclipses. They will learn about the various stages in the life cycle of a star, from its formation to its death. Students will gain an understanding of the technology used to explore space and the contributions of space exploration to our understanding of the universe. They will examine the various space missions and the instruments and equipment used to collect data and images from space.
