Unit of Study: PSYCH! It’s all in your head

 

Brief Description: This science unit of study explores the structure of the human brain and nervous system and how these control all the functions of the human body. Open up the minds of the past and see how they planned experiments that revealed to us the deepest secrets of being human. Figure out what happens when the brain doesn’t function as it's supposed to.

 

Scaffolding Learning

At the conclusion of this unit of study students will have: 

 

An understanding of key knowledge

  • The anatomical structure and function of the brain and nervous systems (VCSSU118)
  • The history of psychology and its evolution over time (VCSSU114)
  • Explore the mental health continuum, and how mental health professionals diagnose and treat different conditions (VCE Psychology)
  • Examine personality, including the biological, psychological and social factors that influence its development (VCE Psychology)

  • Designing and constructing appropriate graphs to represent data and to look for trends and patterns (VCSIS137)
  • Use knowledge to evaluate investigation conclusions, including assessing the approaches used to solve problems, critically analysing the validity of information obtained from primary and secondary sources, suggesting possible alternative explanations and describing specific ways to improve the quality of data (VCSIS139)
  • Communicate scientific ideas and information for a particular purpose, including constructing evidence-based arguments and using appropriate scientific language, conventions and representations (VCSIS140)
