Subject Name: Physical Education

 

Unit of Study:  Sports Psychology

 

Brief Description: This elective explores the power of the mind and how mental skills are the key to unlocking consistent high level performance for any activity or sport. These mental skills are also transferable to any pursuit or endeavour where you want to achieve great things. This is predominantly a theoretical subject. Students will also be using this knowledge and applying it to junior sporting teams during school sporting round-robins

 

Scaffolding Learning

At the conclusion of this unit of study, students will have: 

 

An understanding of key knowledge

  • The relationship to psychology and how powerful the mind is in achieving goals
  • The history of Sport Psychology and its evolution over time to where it is now regarded as the last frontier in the pursuit of excellence
  • Examine the role of Sport Psychologists in elite sporting organisations 
  • Explore the areas of Motivation, Focus and Flow, Attention and Concentration , Arousal, Goal Setting, Peak Performance and the power of Teams 
  • Examine mindfulness and relaxations strategies 

Attained these key skills 

  • Examine moments when students have experienced Flow- and extend on how to plan to repeat these moments in other aspects of their life
  • Being able to implement Goal Setting strategies to improve performance in sport and school life for both the short and long term
  • Being able to use strategies to calm the mind - to increase focus in challenging situations 
  • Develop teamwork, communication, and cooperation skills

Moving the body

  • Evaluate own and others’ movement compositions, and provide and apply feedback in order to enhance performance situations (VCHPEM153)
  • Develop, implement and evaluate movement concepts and strategies for successful outcomes (VCHPEM154)

Understanding movement

  • Analyse the impact of effort, space, time, objects and people when composing and performing movement sequences (VCHPEM156)

Learning through movement

  • Devise, implement and refine strategies demonstrating leadership and collaboration skills when working in groups or teams (VCHPEM158)
  • Transfer understanding from previous movement experiences to create solutions to movement challenges (VCHPEM159)
  • Reflect on how fair play and ethical behaviour can influence the outcomes of movement activities (VCHPEM160)
