Unit of Study: Senior German
Brief Description: In this unit of study students expand, grow and refine their speaking, writing, reading and listening skills with the aim of preparing for VCE German. They will learn about modern German music, the history, landmarks and culture of Berlin, looking after our planet with environmental protection and how the law applies to young people in German-speaking countries. This unit will prepare students for VCE German, and is compulsory for any student considering this future pathway.
Scaffolding Learning
At the conclusion of this unit of study students will have:
An understanding of key knowledge
- How to build sentences, so students can express themselves while remaining grammatically correct
- How to express opinions with reasoning in intermediate level spoken German
- How to apply the rules of grammar cases and verb tenses to writing and speaking
Attained these key skills
- Understand and apply in complex sentences a range of vocabulary and grammatical structures
- Interpret and/or translate German and English texts, identifying and explaining culture-specific aspects
- Convey ideas, information and views from multiple sources, using different modes of presentation to suit different audiences and to achieve different purposes
Demonstrated the Victorian curriculum standards and capabilities
- Socialising - Initiate and maintain interactions with peers and adults by seeking and offering ideas, opinions and feelings as well as information related to relationships, school experience, community and future plans (VCDEC018)
- Informing - Present information and opinions in different modes and familiar text types appropriate to audience, context and purpose, applying conventions of text types (VCDEC022)
- Creating - Create a variety of imaginative texts to entertain, convey ideas and express emotions (VCDEC024)
- Translating - Create bilingual texts such as captions, glossaries or footnotes to interpret cultural and linguistic aspects of texts (VCDEC026)
- Reflecting - interact with a range of German speakers and texts, being aware of audience and context, and recognising that intercultural communication involves shared responsibility for meaning-making (VCDEC027)

Students will be required to complete the following assessment tasks:
- Reading, speaking, writing and listening tasks
- Mid-year and end of year examination
