Term 3 Changes in Secondary

The wonderful Mrs Golden will be taking maternity leave from Week 3 until the end of the year. I wish her well for the birth of her second child and can’t wait to meet the newest addition to her family.

In anticipation of this leave, two new part-time staff have been employed and some internal changes have been made. I would like to welcome Mrs Lisa Merrett and Mrs Jennifer Cox to Boorowa Central School. Mrs Merrett is teaching Year 12 Exploring Early Childhood, Year 7 and 8 Technology Mandatory and some Year 8 English. Mrs Cox is teaching Year 7 English, Year 8 English and Stage 5 Geography.

Mr Flyght is now teaching Stage 5 Computing Technology and Year 8 Technology as a part of his teaching load.

Mr Keighley will be the Year 9 Advisor and Mr Blomfield will relieve as TAS/CAPA Faculty Leader for the rest of the year.

Save the Date – Subject Selection Night

Students entering Year 9 and Year 11 in 2025, and their parents, are invited to the annual Subject Selection Evening on Monday 12 August in the Boorowa Central School Library.

This evening is an important milestone in the educational journey for these students, and their parents. For our Year 8 students, this is their first opportunity to choose subjects they wish to study. These 3 ‘electives’ will be a part of their pattern of study in 2025 and are offered on the school’s ability to teach these subjects. Thankfully we have well trained and dedicated staff who can deliver a variety of subjects.

Subject Selection evening times:

  • Year 8 into 9 Subject Selection: 6 – 6.40pm
  • Year 10 into 11 Subject Selection: 7 – 8pm

Light refreshments will be provided.

I look forward to sharing this exciting evening with you.

The NAPLAN results are in

The 2024 NAPLAN results arrived at school late last week and were sent home with students on Monday. Please check your child’s bag for the NAPLAN envelope and contact the school if you have any questions.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9.

It is a nationwide measure through which parents/carers, teachers, schools, education authorities, governments and the broader community can determine whether or not young Australians are developing the literacy and numeracy skills that provide the critical foundation for other learning and for their productive and rewarding participation in the community.

NAPLAN results allow parents/carers and educators to see how students are progressing in literacy and numeracy over time – individually, as part of their school community, and against national standards.

The tests support monitoring and evaluating of the performance of schools and school systems in these fundamental capabilities. They also provide schools, states and territories with information about how education approaches are working, areas to be prioritised for improvement, and those schools requiring support in the teaching and learning of literacy and numeracy.

The results can assist teachers by providing additional information to support their professional judgement about students’ levels of literacy and numeracy attainment and progress.

NAPLAN tests are one aspect of each school’s assessment and reporting process and do not replace the extensive, ongoing assessments made by teachers about each student’s performance. Each teacher will have the best insight into their students’ educational progress. Parents/carers can use NAPLAN reports, along with other school assessment reports, to discuss their child’s strengths and areas for improvement with their teacher.

NAPLAN results do not measure overall school quality.

The assessments are undertaken nationwide, every year during March.

NAPLAN is made up of tests in the 4 areas (or ‘domains’) of:

  • reading
  • writing
  • conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation)
  • numeracy

Check-in Assessments for 7, 8 and 9

Each year, students in year 3 to 9 participate in the Check-in assessments. These assessments support the identification of students’ performance in literacy and numeracy and informs next steps in teaching and learning. All assessments are completed digitally.

Year 7, 8 and 9 completed their check-in assessments this week on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday with a catch-up day next Monday for students who missed an assessment.

Year 3-6 will complete their Check-in assessments later this term.

Parent/Teacher Interviews

It was great seeing many of you throughout the week for the Infants and Primary interviews as well as at the secondary interviews on Tuesday evening. Research supports the fact that students whose parents are actively involved in their education achieve higher educational outcomes. By working together, our students can achieve individual excellence and develop into caring and community minded young people with the skills to succeed in a changing world.

Please do not wait for these interviews if you have any questions regarding your child’s academic progress. Our staff are only too happy to take your call or to meet with you.

To speak to a staff member or to arrange a meeting, please contact the school on 6385 3009.
