Kitchen Garden
Last week 4S started their Kitchen Garden program. During the session, students familiarised themselves with the garden while they completed an alphabet treasure hunt, aiming to find as many garden related words as they explored the garden.
We learnt all about composting by making mini compost jars which replicate the big ones in the garden. Students will watch the progress as they decompose over time with lots of worms and microorganisms in action.
3G had their last session in the garden, which kept them busy completing lots of garden activities. Tasks last week included planting peas and onions, emptying compost bins, feeding the worms, painting the table cloth and chopping spent plants up and preparing garden beds for the next rotation of planting.
On Friday 3G will have their cooking session. On the menu is pumpkin soup, broccoli and cauliflower carbonara with homemade pasta, and apple and rhubarb muffins.
The Science Fair is on from 4-6pm Monday 12th August (Week 5), and we will have the kitchen garden market cart set up with fresh produce, preserves and other garden goodies for sale. There will also be a sausage sizzle and bake stall.
Kitchen Garden Helpers
We warmly welcome parents, grandparents and carers to help with activities during our kitchen garden sessions for the grade 3 and 4 students. It's a great way to connect with your children and the WEPS community, and you might even learn some new gardening and cooking tips! To volunteer, you must have a current working with children's check and sign in at the office. You child doesn't need to be participating in the kitchen garden program for you to volunteer. For more information regarding session times etc, contact your child's teacher or email suzanne.seniore@education.vic.gov.au
