Year 5/6 - Senior Unit

Dear Senior Unit Families,

Welcome to another exciting term of learning in the Senior Unit! Please find some important updates and an overview of our learning focus below:

Year 6 Transition Forms

Year 6 transition forms have been handed out this week. Please ensure these are returned to Mrs. Elliott as soon as possible (do not send them to the office). Every student is required to return a form, even if they are not attending a public high school. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Elliott directly.

Home Learning

Home Learning has been shared on Google Classrooms. For students who do not have access to a device at home, printed copies are available in each classroom. Tasks are to be completed by the due date and Home Learning books handed to the classroom teacher. These tasks are designed to support students’ time management and reinforce concepts covered in class. All students are expected to complete the activities independently.

Literacy

This term, our focus in Literacy is on explanation texts, where students will learn how to clearly describe how and why things happen. Later in the term, we will move into narrative writing, with a focus on the science fiction genre, closely linking with our Inquiry unit on space.

Numeracy

We are beginning the term with statistics, where students will collect data and represent it using a variety of graphs, including digital formats. We will then explore units of measurement (length, mass, and capacity), apply knowledge of the Cartesian plane to locate and describe coordinates, and investigate transformations, order of operations, and 12- and 24-hour time conversions.

Inquiry

Our Inquiry unit is guided by the Essential Question: “How do light and gravity work in space?” Students will participate in a range of hands-on experiments and investigations to explore these physical and earth science concepts. This unit will also link closely with our Literacy work in science fiction.
