Foundation

In the past week, Prep students have learnt about the /t/ sound. The students have learnt to segment and stretch out the sounds in words like t/a/p  and  m/a/t, building on the sounds they already know /m/ and /s/. They have continued to practise forming the letters on white boards and in their workbooks.

Gr 1

Students in Grade 1 have been revising consonant sounds /ck/, /sh/ and /wh/. They have been using sound boxes to hear each sound in words. They have enjoyed the story Pete the Sheep and made a word web using words from the story.

Gr 2

During Spelling, the students have focussed on the long vowel sounds such as /i/ like pie, try, high and /o/ like boat, blow, wrote. They also listened to the story Pete the Sheep and they revised the narrative structure and were able to summarize the main points of the story.

Foundation

In Maths, students have been using dice and unifix blocks to make towers. They have added one more and practiced counting on to find the total amount. They have also learnt the terms more than, fewer than to describe a jar with pictures. They have used pom poms to count how many. They have stood up if they have more or less than a given number.

Gr 1

In Maths, students have been revising counting by 1s. They have learnt to represent 2-digit numbers with MAB base ten blocks. They have revised reading numbers as words and making models of numbers using tens and ones.

Gr 2

In Maths, the students have been assessed with Place Value of numbers. They have begun exploring time – telling the time and drawing the hands to the hour on an analogue clock. They have learnt to read time on small plastic clock faces as o’clock.

Gr 3 and 4

During Literacy, the students have continued to read the novel Matilda. The students have also explored writing in a persuasive style. They were timed with 5 minutes to plan, 40 minutes to write and 5 minutes to reread and edit.

During Maths, the students have revised 3-digit numbers. The students have explored addition and subtraction using partitioning strategies. Eg for 37 + 12 you can add 30 + 10 = 40 and 7 +2 = 9 so the answer is 49. Students were encouraged to share the mental strategies they were using.

Gr 5 and 6

During Literacy, the students have continued to read the novel War Horse. The students have both listened to their teacher read and have read to themselves parts of the story. This was followed up with understanding vocabulary that was in the story, such as dismissively, gawkishness, rudiments. Writing at a sentence level has been explored with expanding a sentence to include “who”, “when”, “why” and “how”. Students have also explored the use of punctuation, such as apostrophes.

During Maths, as part of the daily review, students have participated in timetables fluency tests. The students have explored and revised the properties of numbers such as number factors and multiples. Grade 6 students have revised using the order of operations, such as 2 + 3 x 4, explain that you first perform the multiplication 3 x 4 = 12, and then perform the addition 2 + 12 = 14.

New - NAPLAN

The students in Year 3 and 5 have completed NAPLAN tests in Writing, Reading, Language Conventions and Mathematics. They should be congratulated for participating with a positive mindset to give each test their very best efforts.
