Burnie Campus Principal

Welcome back to Term 2 at Leighland Christian School.
One of the things that we have been trying to get better at, is celebrating success and special milestones with staff and students.
Since the end of term, Miss Keddie & Miss Hursey got engaged, Mr Marmion became a grandfather again to a beautiful little girl, Mrs Gates celebrated a milestone birthday, we sent the Year 6 students off to camp in Hobart and two of our students won their cheerleading category at an international competition in America!
This week, I had the privilege of being asked to present to some education students at the Burnie Campus of UTAS. My topic was around NCCD (Nationally Consistent Collection of Data), different diagnoses that students may have and how to make adjustments for them so that they have equal access to the curriculum and their learning. I loved being back in the classroom with the teachers of the future and was encouraged to hear that an increasing number have chosen education as their future career. One of the key points of my presentation was to encourage them to celebrate successes with their students, no matter how small that success may seem to others.
As a campus, we celebrated reaching 180 enrolments at the end of Term 1. When I first came for my Principal’s interview and to meet with the Board and Mr Mace, the Ulverstone Principal at the time, he shared with me that one day they hoped and prayed that we would reach this number; so, we chose to celebrate when we did! Through a dedicated commitment from the School Board to invest in the infrastructure at Burnie, and a team effort from incredible staff, we have been able to build for growth which has led to greater enrolments and the opportunity to welcome many new families into our school community.
Over the last several weeks, I have been completing kinder interviews for 2026. During the school tours and interview process, we get to know the child and their family a little better and through this process we celebrate the milestones that have been reached as the little ones prepare for Kinder in the coming year.
While we were saddened that Mrs Russell resigned to take up a new position, we celebrate the appointment of Miss Faith Hursey, our new receptionist, and the way that God orchestrated for her to be here at just the right time for just the right job.
Sometimes in the busyness and daily grind of life, we can miss the opportunities to celebrate these things, and that truly is a shame because we can miss a beautiful moment or opportunity to lift someone up.
As we go into the Mother’s Day weekend, please make sure we take some time to celebrate the important women in our lives. My mum is 81 years old and works in the family business 4 days a week. She is a go getter who loves to travel, to spend time with family and friends and who is heavily engaged in her local church where she often talks about the ‘old people’. She is sassy, strong-willed, kind, and even though I won’t be with her on Sunday, I will still be celebrating the impact she has had on my life and the lives of many other people.
To our mums, our waiting and wanting to be mums, aunties, special friends, grandmas, and other women of influence, we wish you a wonderful Mother’s Day on Sunday and we will be praying that you are celebrated and treasured.
Proverbs 31:25-26 - She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.
