Learning in Grade 6!

Buddies

It’s been a busy two weeks in Year 6.  The students have been having lots of fun with their buddy and enjoyed a ‘Scavenger Hunt’ around the school to orientate the preps.  Together they had to find places like, the Music Room, the Canteen and the chickens.

Training for Winter Interschool Sport has started with a selection of sports like, soccer, softball, touch footy, AFL, netball and lawn bowls. Students have been learning lots of skills and the rules of the game.

A selection of enthusiastic Year 6 Indonesian students  were invited to attend an Indonesian Cultural Day at Heathmont College.  The students had the opportunity to participate in activities like sepak takraw, Indonesian games (congkla), dancing (poco poco), martial arts (Pencak Silat) and an enjoyable lunch of nasi goreng.

Writing

The Year 6 students have been learning about how to write a powerful persuasive text choosing from topics such as:

Should hunting for sport be banned?

Is social media harmful or helpful?

Is it important to learn a 2nd language?

Is it ethical to keep animals in zoos?

Literature studies are an important focus for the Year 6 students.

This term, each class is reading a different novel where the focus is to unpack each chapter, by learning to analyse, interpret and evaluate.

  • 6A are reading ‘Danny, Champion of the World’
  • 6B are reading ‘Darius Bell and the Glitter Pool’
  • 6C are reading ‘Matilda’

Mathematics has focused on making connections and converting between fractions, decimals and percentages. Presently, the students are learning how to calculate elapsed time.

Our Government Incursion was loads of fun as the facilitator created a mock parliament and the students got to role play (and dress up) as various positions e.g. The Speaker, the Sargeant-At-Arms, the Premier, the Leader of the Opposition and Members of Parliament.

The students explored the preferential voting system and the process to elect a clear winner.

Just last week, the Year 6 students attended a talk by Victoria Police, titled 'Think U Know' on how to keep yourself safe when online.

We also celebrated Harmony Day by completing activities to recognize Australia's cultural diversity and to promote respect and inclusion for all people.
