Religious Education Professional Development for Teachers
Monday, 14 October 2024
Whilst there was a Pupil Free Day for students on Monday, 14 October, the teachers were at school enjoying a day learning about Planning for a Dialogical Religious Education Inquiry.
Teachers spent the day delving into the R.E. curriculum - To Live In Christ Jesus, in particular, the focus Strand for this term: Christian Life and Catholic Social Teaching. They looked at the importance of dialogue as the channel for a true inquiry and how to open up opportunities for student voice in the classroom.
Time was also dedicated to unlocking the meaning of the Word of God, exploring how teachers can personally engage with Scripture from the Bible along with fun ways for engaging students in Scripture.
Here are the teachers in action performing a Chorus Play and an Echo Mime of our two feature Scripture pieces for this term which include: The Birth of Jesus (Lk 2:1-7) and The Shepherds and the Angels (Lk 8-20).
Pre-assessment strategies were shared to determine the most suitable starting point for the class's learning. Drawing upon their inspiration from the day's learning, teachers planned the provocation they would use to engage their class of students in their RE Inquiry: Called To Make A Difference.
We are grateful to Di Austin (from the DOSCEL office) for sharing her bountiful wisdom on all things R.E.

For members of the St Laurence's Community interested in learning more about our focus strand, Christian Life and Catholic Social Teaching, we encourage you to watch the video: Catholic Social Teaching Animation for Children - CAFOD. This video outlines the language and concepts that students will be exploring this term.
Students Participate in the Diocesan Consultation - Phase 2
For the next few weeks, local Catholics are gathering in their communities to share how they are being followers of Jesus by helping others and the world. They are also looking at what they can do better. Mrs Ginanne invited students in the 5/6 classes to be a part of this process because their voices are important voices to be heard in our diocese. Students shared their responses to the following two questions:
1. What do you think the Catholic school and parish are doing well here in Leongatha? 2. It would be even better if the Catholic school and parish here in Leongatha did the following over the next five years …
We are thankful to the grade 5/6 students who contributed their ideas and we pray the following prayer for all parishioners taking part in this process in the near future...
Creator God,You sent your Holy Spirit to be our helper and guide.May our eyes really see, our ears really hear, and our voices speak kindly.May your gift of wisdom expand our thinkingand may your gift of courage help us to share our thoughts bravely andrespectfully.AmenThank you,
