"Reading is Magic"
Book Week 2024
"The library is not just full of books, but also opportunities."
Abbey 2016
Our library window has the symbolism of the tree of knowledge. However, knowledge is not the only reason we have a library or the purpose of our library.
Over the coming weeks, this segment will feature words from the leaves on our library tree.
Our words this week are CONNECT and RELAX
CONNECT: students are invited to connect to the world through the online encyclopedia, Worldbook online and the print resources. Students connect in a social setting through various activities including games, drawing, book group activities - Book Buzz, and conversing with their peers in a calm and comfortable environment.
RELAX: The library provides students with a calm and comfortable environment to read, relax by themselves or with a friend or just to sit and breathe. Students have been known to fall asleep on cushions or just enjoy being.
Last Thursday I attended the MANTLE LIBRARY Conference.
Thankyou to Mr Clery for allowing me the opportunity to connect with like-minded professionals.
I would like to share some key points:
"The World Through Picture Books" - this session opened my eyes to the many picture books available from countries all around the world and the importance of exposing our students to a diverse collection of texts.
I attended a workshop by author Nat Amoore "Humour and Heart" https://www.natamoore.com/.
Nat was energetic and exuberant in her presentation. Nat is a writer who is passionate about encouraging kids to read, write and explore their imagination without boundaries. Nat combines humour and heart in her books giving students a sense of connection with, and empathy for, the protagonist.
Nat related that sometimes people discard "funny books" as not being of merit for students to read. Humour, however, combined with heart can be a perfect vehicle for our students to develop empathy through hilarious situations. "We Run Tomorrow" features the major theme of compassion, or concern for other people's suffering. The humour -
"Tonight, we’re gonna kidnap our best friend. And tomorrow? We run." This book is rarely on the shelf since its purchase, a testament to student engagement in humour and heart.
On Monday afternoon Yr 4 engaged in an incursion provided by the State Library of NSW, Learning Services Team.
FAR Out! Treasures to the Bush.
The presentation told the story of the navigators who mapped the Australian Coastline. The focus was on early navigators who visited the west coast of Australia including Dirk Hartog and William Dampier. The Learning Team brought rare collection items that the students had an opportunity to view and discuss with the team.
It's great to see so many library bags returning full of returns, thank you!
Keep them coming.
Keep in mind that Issue 8 will be available in a few weeks online, if you wish to purchase items for Christmas gifts. The items will still come to school and I will contact you for pick up.

Book Busters
BOOK BUSTERS CLUB is an optional early morning reading club for students who wish to come into the cool library before school to read.
"The strongest positive impact on reading engagement and learning gains comes from student self-selection of reading materials. When reading materials are selected for students the links to engagement and learning gain decline significantly."
How Reading Motivation and Engagement Enable Reading Achievement: Policy Implications, Ana Taboada Barber and Susan Lutz Klauda
When students visit the library a huge emphasis is placed on the
premise that they have
CHOICE
in what they can read and borrow.
In the library we are safe online and respectful of each other and the technology.

Please note a LIBRARY BAG is the first item on your child's equipment list for this year.
Thank you for ensuring your child has a library bag. I have some spares and will issue these to students next week who have not yet presented with a bag.
LIBRARY BAGS MATTER... Not just some of the time but all of the time.
No food or drink on my books.
Food and drink are for the chooks.
Library bags keep ‘em clean.
Books are cool don’t treat ‘em mean.
Bring your bag every time.
Fill it up and get in line.
Have it scanned and scoot on out.
LIBRARY BAGS
We all shout.
