Learning @ TPPS
Grade 1 Camp
The Grade 1 students had a wonderful experience during camp night. They enjoyed a delicious pizza dinner, popcorn and an icy pole, while watching a great movie, and even had a chance to show off some groovy dance moves.
Grade 3 Camp
This week the Grade 3s went on their very first camp!
We enjoyed amazing food and fun activities including rock-climbing, candle making and everyone’s favourite: the Giant Swing! The children enjoyed a PJ disco and came back exhausted (teachers too!). Thank you to our wonderful parent helpers.
Maths Talent Quest (MTQ) Awards Ceremony
It was with great excitement that 6 students headed off to RMIT University in Melbourne this week for the official MTQ Awards Ceremony. Every year, entries awarded a ‘High Distinction’ in the competition are presented with certificates at a special ceremony. This year, our class entries from Prep TF, 1M and 1E achieved this outcome, as did Izzy Y from Grade 5 for her individual entry, ‘How Does Gambling Affect Australia?’.
Representatives from these classes were called to the stage to receive their classes’ certificate. In addition to this, Xavier and Evie, our Prep representatives, went up on stage for a second time to be awarded a certificate for their classes’ entry being judged a Victorian State winner and entered into the National competition! What an outstanding achievement!
The MTQ competition attracted a total of over 450 entries for judging from 50 schools. Unbeknown to us until it happened at the ceremony, Templestowe Park Primary School was then named as one of only a handful of schools to receive an ‘Outstanding School’ award due to the quality, focus and commitment towards mathematics education. Wow! That is a huge honour! We have now added another plaque acknowledging this to our trophy cabinet in the office foyer.
We would like to thank our dedicated staff who work hard planning and implementing such quality programs to get our students learning about maths.
MAV Grade 6 Maths Games Day – 1st place!
Every year, we also send teams of selected students to compete against other government and independent schools in the Maths Association of Victoria (MAV) Maths Games Day competition. Last week this was held at Genazzano College in Kew. Teams of 4 competed against each other in problem solving activities, mental maths and automatic response challenges, as well as probability games, through a number of rounds. Well done to Leena B, Stella B, Austin D and Josh V for representing TPPS as one of our teams so diligently. In total there were 48 teams of 4 students competing against each other. The exciting news is that our other TPPS team of Austin G, Blake J, Lowgethan K and Ciaran K came 1ST PLACE overall! OUTSTANDING! This is the first time ever we have achieved this level of success at a MAV Games Day. Well done!
We would like to acknowledge and thank the entire Grade 5&6 team of teachers who have worked hard preparing and supporting our students in weekly problem solving instruction. In particular, we would like to thank Mr Jared Kitney, who worked closely with our team representatives over Term 2 & 3 to cement their problem solving skills.
Sport News
The term has kicked off with strong performances in sports, as multiple teams represented our school in various competitions against other schools. Here's a summary of the recent events:
- Division Athletics: Students competed at the Bill Sewert Athletics Track against some of the top athletes in the area. TPPS performed well, with 7 of the 19 participants qualifying for the Regional Finals next week.
- District Basketball: Our girls' and boys' All-Star teams played against local schools on Wednesday. The girls' team finished 2nd overall, narrowly losing to OLOP in the final, while the boys' team won their final, securing 1st place.
- Senior Regional Future Stars: On Friday, the Senior Future Stars team competed in the regional finals at the State Basketball Centre. The team went undefeated, winning their qualifying final, and will now advance to the state finals in early December.
- Summer Interschool Sport Division Finals: Both the Grade 5/6 cricket team and the girls' rounders team played their division finals on Thursday. While the boys' cricket team unfortunately lost in a closely contested match, the girls' rounders team triumphed, becoming division champions.
Congratulations to all the students involved! Best of luck to the school basketball team in their division final, as well as our lawn bowls teams, Junior Future Stars teams, and individual athletes competing in their regional finals next week.
