Grade 1
Reading
In Literacy, we have explored a number of new sounds including ‘c’ saying /s/, ‘g’ saying /j/ and ‘_dge’ as in bridge. Each day, students have completed a follow up activity based on the explicit teaching for the session, as well as consolidating their prior knowledge by participating in a range of activities such as tricky word rainbow writing, word sorting and more. Students have particularly enjoyed using ipads to read texts in the MultiLit library, as well as reading hard copies of the texts.
Writing
Over the last 2 weeks, students have been introduced to a new mentor text “Migaloo - The White Whale”. The story tells of a special whale named ‘Migaloo’, who discovers the beauty, wonder and danger of a whale’s journey throughout their annual migration. As we revisited the story over the fortnight, students have learnt the definition of the words: struggle, calm and desperately to help utilise in their writing. They participated in a fact file activity which led the Grade 1’s into a small presentation in front of their peers, practising their speaking and listening skills.
Maths
In Maths, students have been continuing to explore and compare the features of bar graphs and pictographs. We have also inquired into what it means to interpret data through asking and answering questions relating to graphs such as - What is the graph about? What are the categories? Which category has the most votes? Which category has the least votes? What is the difference between least and most? How many people voted in this graph? The students have also been tested on justifying their answers using the following question - How do you know that?
Integrated
This week, students participated in sharing and inquiring into the celebration of Diwali! Many students thoroughly enjoyed sharing their experiences of the celebration they have with their families and the traditions they have. Other students appreciated listening and learning more about the special holiday and what it means for their fellow classmates. They participated in a variety of activities involving paper lantern making and colouring. We extend our happiness and acknowledge outwards to all Year 1 families who are celebrating Diwali this week!
