Heat Transfer in Action!
This term, our Year 3/4 students have been busy exploring the exciting world of heat transfer through hands-on experiments and real-world investigations. Here’s a quick look at what we've been up to:
Conduction Experiment: Watching Heat in Action
In one of our experiments, we explored conduction by monitoring how heat moves through solid materials. Students placed a piece of butter at one end of three different spoons made of different materials: metal, wood, and plastic. They then immersed the other end of the spoon in hot water. As the spoon heated up, the butter began to melt and slide down the spoon, providing a clear example of how heat moves from the hot end to the cooler end through conduction.
Solar Oven Challenge: Melting S’mores with the Power of the Sun!
Our solar oven project was a huge hit! Students worked together to plan, problem-solve, and investigate how they could use the heat from the sun to cook delicious s’mores. They designed their own solar ovens, tested them, and successfully heated up their treats. It was a fun and tasty way to see heat transfer in action, all while learning about the power of the sun’s energy! Students measured the temperature of the inside of their solar ovens and created graphs to display their results.
It’s been wonderful to observe the enthusiasm and curiosity our Year 3/4 students have brought to their exploration of heat transfer this term. They have demonstrated great teamwork, creativity, and scientific inquiry, from experimenting with conduction to creating solar ovens. We look forward to seeing how their newfound knowledge will inspire future projects and investigations!

SACSA Touch Football Carnival
Week 5 saw two very enthusiastic Year 5/6 teams head out from Brooklyn Park campus to the SACSA Touch Football Carnival. Just seven weeks ago, this sport was unfamiliar to this cohort, but they quickly picked up the skills, tactics, and rules incredibly well in a combination of PE lessons and lunchtime training.
Our Brooklyn Park girls were unstoppable and undefeated all day until finals. It was a warm day, and after seven high-energy matches, the finals saw us lose some momentum with some sore and tired legs! The girls came out Third overall (and had beat First and Second place earlier in the day), which was an incredible feat.
Our boys got an early win, then had several close matches, missing some by a try in the final 1-2 minutes of the game, coming Seventh in the end.
A big shout out to Mr Alex Lauder for his dedication to training our boys' team leading up to and on the day. As always, during these carnivals, we see so much more growth than sporting development—we see so many opportunities for personal growth in good sportsmanship, new friendships to be formed, growth in self-confidence, and persistence through trials—all wonderful teachable moments for our young people.
Well done to all students involved!
