Year 11 VCE VM Numeracy Moonlit Sanctuary Excursion
In the final week of Term 2, our Year 11 VCE VM students visited Moonlit Sanctuary in Pearcedale as part of their Civics Numeracy unit. The excursion supports their current SAC, where students will create a poster presentation that uses statistics and mathematical reasoning to help decide which endangered Australian animal should receive conservation funding.
Students spent the day exploring the Sanctuary, feeding wallabies and kangaroos while enjoying the atmosphere on a sunny and beautiful day. They were engaged and curious throughout, asking questions and learning about a range of native Australian animals.
Moonlit Sanctuary is home to over 70 Australian species, many of which are threatened or endangered. Students learned about conservation efforts for animals such as the orange-bellied parrot, Tasmanian devil, and southern bettong. They explored the causes of endangerment including habitat loss, invasive predators, climate change and the role that breeding programs and public awareness play in protecting these species.
Back at school, students are now working on their poster projects, which involve collecting and analysing data related to animal populations, threats, and conservation costs. They’ll use a range of numeracy skills including percentages, data displays, and voting methods to present a clear, evidence-based case for funding one of the species they encountered.
We’re looking forward to seeing how they apply their maths skills to support a meaningful cause.

During the last week of term 2, the year 11 numeracy cohort attended an excursion to Moonlit Sanctuary to help contribute to our upcoming SAC. It was an exhilarating excursion where could interact with some of the animals such as feeding the kangaroos and wallabies.
We also got up close with some reptiles as well as learning about different Australian animals. My group was lucky enough to see two of the Koala’s awake, one running around and coming up close to us through the glass.
Overall, it was a wonderful experience and very beneficial for our upcoming SAC!

The moonlit sanctuary was a good experience with good guides. The guides made sure to highlight all the different animal species, there was plenty of animals to see with plenty of free roam to look for whatever we wanted to.
The wallaby walk was the best part as we were able to feed the kangaroos and wallabies, it was cool as they could just walk up to you and we could pet them.
This related to our Numeracy project as we are doing Civic Numeracy, this will help when we mapped out what we did understanding directions better. It also helped with making the poster with plenty information around the Sanctuary about the animals that we chose to research about.
Overall, it was a good experience.

VPC Numeracy Excursion to the city
On the 28th of July, the VPC Numeracy students went on an excursion to the city as part of their ‘Planning a trip to the city’ SAC. The students learnt to navigate around the city using maps, they used the PTV & google maps to help plan their itinerary and also learnt to read train timetables.

“We went to the city for an excursion and learnt how to follow an itinerary, went to graffiti lane, to the NGV then to Melbourne central. Maybe got a little lost but it was so much fun to enjoy the day in the city”

“Going on the city excursion to Melbourne city was such a fun and exciting experience. We got the chance to explore different parts of the city, including the National Gallery of Victoria and Melbourne Central shopping centre. It was not just a break from our usual school routine, but also an opportunity to learn, have fun, and enjoy time with friends in a completely different environment”
