Multicultural Dinner - A Celebration of Diversity
On Saturday 9th August, Killester College hosted its annual Multicultural Dinner for the Killester community. The Multicultural Dinner is a great way to celebrate and showcase the diverse community of Killester. It was lovely to see so many people attending and supporting many of our talented students.
The night was prepared through the hard work of the teachers, as well as many of the students running activities, performing, preparing food and hosting. Overall, it was a great success, and many donations were made to BASP (Brigidine Asylum Seekers Project).
In a united community, it is always important to celebrate our roots and share our cultures, and it was wonderful to see so many different cultures intermingling and chatting. Thank you to all of the students and staff who assisted and made the dinner possible. Thank you to those who graciously donated and purchased raffle tickets (and congratulations to the many prize winners!). We are forever grateful for the community that we are in, one that allows the appreciation of diversity.

Year 11 & 12 Environmental Stewardship
We're very proud to see our Killester girls leading the way in sustainability and environmental care! Year 8 students recently participated in the Ames Community Garden, helping to nurture our local environment.
Our Year 11 & 12 students joined a meaningful day of tree planting at Saltbush Balnarring. These experiences highlight Killester’s strong commitment to fostering environmental stewardship and making a positive impact on our community. Together, we’re planting seeds for a greener future!

Yr 12 Personal Development Day
On Wednesday 6th August, our Year 12 cohort took a break from their regular schedule to spend a day dedicated to connection and personal growth. The morning began in Homeroom, where students prepared for the day’s activities and unleashed their creativity by decorating their own sunglasses.
After morning tea, everyone gathered in the Tullow Building for an inspiring and interactive Resilience Presentation. Students explored practical strategies for managing stress, bouncing back from challenges, and fostering a positive mindset—valuable tools as they prepare for their final year of school and beyond.
The day wrapped up with a lively Silent Disco in Kennedy Hall. With plenty of bopping, singing, and laughter, the room was filled with joy and energy.
A big thank you to Ms Jewel, our Year 12 Level Leader, and our Year 12 Homeroom Teachers for creating a memorable Personal Development Day that celebrated connection, learning and fun.
Teen Chef Competition
On Wednesday the 6th of August, Killester's Teen Chef team participated in the 2025 competition. Teen Chef is a Masterchef type competition that competes every year among the SEGAP schools.
This year the event was held at OLSH and required students from each school to prepare a main course and a dessert in under ninety minutes, with the Australian Culinary Federation judging the event.
I am very proud to announce that Killester achieved a silver medal overall.
Congratulations to the team members of Georgia N, Tina L, Sophia V, Angela D and Isabelle D. Well done!

Year 9 Italian Excursion
On Wednesday 23 July, the Year 9 Italian classes went on their Italian immersion excursion to three different venues. They visited Museo Italiano, Lygon Street and Mediterranean Supermarket. At the Museo Italiano, Co As It in Carlton, they listened to a speaker, watched some videos and learned about the history of post-World War 2 Italian migration to the city of Carlton and Melbourne. They learned about the reasons the migrants left Italy, the difficulties they faced when they arrived and how they contributed to Australian society. They then completed a walk around Lygon Street exploring the various Italian shops and restaurants and visited an italian supermarket and explored all the Italian products. All in all the students had a great Italian cultural immersion day. Here are some of their comments:
”I enjoyed looking at the artefacts at the il Museo Italiano and learning about migration from Italy to Australia which I never knew before”. I enjoyed learning about the different types of Italian food in the Mediterranean Supermarket. Hannah
“I enjoyed exploring the Italian supermarket as the items and layout are different compared to Woolies or Coles”. Linda
“I learned that Italian people migrated to Australia seeking new opportunities and different jobs for a better future”. I really enjoyed this day. I found the scavenger hunt and Mediterranean Supermarket engaging and interesting. Evana, Irene, Olivia, Ella
“I really enjoyed walking around the Italian exhibition in il Museo Italiano, since we got to explore actual artefacts during the time that Italian migrants were moving to Australia. I also liked looking at the physical objects such as instruments, personal belongings and religious items”. Caitlin, Avyrlle, Sehajileen, Kimberly.
I enjoyed learning about why Italians came to Australia and how they brought their Italian culture into Carlton. Bianca, Brooklyn

CGSAV Volleyball Success!!
On the 12th of August, 7 teams across the junior, intermediate, and senior divisions competed in the CGSAV Volleyball Tournament. This year, brought fierce competition and even stronger Killester teams than ever before! The Junior A team played in the Grand Finals, finishing in second place, while the Junior B team took home first place! The Junior C team narrowly missed out on making it to the Grand Finals. Both the Intermediate A and B teams finished in third place, and the Senior A & B teams absolutely dominated the competition, remaining undefeated throughout the entire day!
The passion and team spirit displayed by each and every team were truly inspiring. It’s a testament to the incredible support from our amazing coaches, CGSAV staff, and fellow teammates. A huge thank you to all those who made this tournament possible!

Year 11 Students Learn and Advocate During Homelessness Week
On Thursday 7th August, Ms Martin, Ms Edwards and Penny accompanied our Year 11 Vocational Major students, along with several of our Social Justice Leaders, to the Southern Homelessness Services Network Exhibition for Homelessness Week.
Students engaged with interactive displays, reading information, creating paper homes, posting messages, and contributing to a collective artwork on the exhibition steps. A particularly moving part of the day was hearing directly from two people with lived experiences of homelessness. They bravely shared their personal journeys, explaining the circumstances that led them to homelessness and the vital services that supported them in rebuilding their lives. We felt honoured by their willingness to speak so openly and honestly.
Back at Killester, the Year 11 students created a display highlighting key learnings from the exhibition to raise awareness within our community. This important focus will continue into Week 6, when Killester hosts its Winter Sleepout. Students and teachers will spend the night at school, standing in solidarity with those who have no place to call home.
