Vermont Secondary College

Our first semester at Vermont

New teachers, unfamiliar faces, and a completely different environment. Starting Year 7 seemed daunting at first. Moving from primary school, where I knew my way around, along with everything being familiar and predictable, to high school, where I struggled to simply find my classroom, was certainly a significant step. However, Vermont Secondary quickly turned those nerves into excitement. The caring teachers and welcoming community made it effortless to settle in, also creating a sense of belonging, and made me feel supported from day one. Whether it’s through sports carnivals, camps, clubs, or the many extracurricular activities to offer, every student has the chance to find where they belong. As a result, my first semester of high school has been far better than I expected. It was built upon new friendships, memorable experiences, and opportunities to grow both inside and outside the classroom. I struggle to believe that not so long ago I was a puzzled year 6 on orientation day, with my knees pressed firmly, palms sweating, head hanging low, with no one from my primary school, desperately seeking for someone to hang out with, aggravated by how hard it was to work my lock. Yet now, within only two terms, that uncertainty has been replaced with confidence, I feel valued within the school community, knowing that my opinions are listened to and respected.

I am beyond grateful for the friendships I have formed with people who brighten even the most challenging days and make every moment memorable. I feel at ease knowing I have teachers who consistently offer guidance and who provide me with assurance and support, fostering unity and discipline. Rather than feeling anxious about coming to school, I now look forward to it each day, knowing that it is a place where I am constantly encouraged to learn, overcome challenges, and strive to be the best version of myself. This is what I believe school should be, not a place to stress about tests, doubt yourself when you get bad grades or restrain yourself to speak your mind, but it should be somewhere to laugh until your stomach hurts, push yourself to best of your capability, display resilience, leadership and creativity, and find where you truly belong. Vermont for me, has made such a huge transition seem so inherent, and has greatly impacted myself, and countless other year 7’s, and for that I am grateful beyond measure.

Cosmodome

The Year 7 cohort recently had the pleasure of participating in a Cosmodome incursion, where a mini planetarium was set up in the school auditorium. This immersive experience allowed students to explore key concepts in astronomy and space science in an engaging and memorable way.

Year 7 students investigated the wonders of the solar system, including the movement of planets, as well as how seasons and tides occur on Earth. The incursion was a fantastic opportunity for students to connect classroom learning with a unique visual experience.
