Year 5/6 News

TRP
As part of the Resilience Project, we learnt about Financial Empathy. Financial empathy is the ability to understand and empathise with someone else’s financial situation and emotions surrounding money.
It involves us putting ourselves in someone else’s shoes and acknowledging the challenges, stresses and uncertainties they may face regarding money and being kind and supportive about it. We had really engaging discussions about how advertising, social media and influencers can shape our wants and desires. We also explored the idea that choosing to spend money on one thing often means giving up the chance to buy something else, helping them make more thoughtful financial decisions while developing empathy for the different financial situations people experience.
Maths
In maths, students continued their learning about decimals, focusing on tenths, hundredths, and thousandths. They participated in a hands-on dice game where they created decimal numbers and represented them by colouring decimal grids. Students then compared their decimals, discussing which numbers were larger or smaller and explaining their reasoning using place value knowledge. This engaging activity helped students build confidence in reading, representing, and comparing decimal numbers.
Religion
In Religion, the Year 5/6 students explored the importance of the Eucharist through the Gospel reading Matthew 14:13–21 (The Feeding of the Five Thousand). Students read and discussed the Scripture passage before completing a range of reflection activities to deepen their understanding. They considered how Jesus took the bread, gave thanks, broke it, and shared it with the people, and made connections to what happens during the celebration of the Eucharist at Mass. We also continue to see growth in our liturgical singing!

Celebrating Riley's Judo Success
Congratulations to Riley, who recently competed in her first Judo National Championships. Riley has shown great dedication and perseverance, and we're proud to share her experience in her own words.
“On Sunday, 7 June, I competed in the Judo National Championships for the first time. Whilst I didn't win a medal, I was the youngest in my division, so I'm hoping to do better next year. In the lead-up to the competition, I trained for 6–7 hours each week and competed in three local competitions and one international competition, where I won a silver medal and a gold medal. I love doing judo because everyone is so nice. I have a great group of friends and amazing coaches. Some of my coaches have been to the Olympics, and others are competing in the Commonwealth Games next month!”
Lastly, a big congratulations to all of our Year 5/6 students on their efforts throughout Semester 1. It has been wonderful to see the growth, persistence, and enthusiasm they have shown across all areas of learning. Every student has worked hard to challenge themselves, develop new skills, and contribute positively to our classroom community. They should all be proud of their achievements and the progress they have made. Have a safe and happy school holidays and we will see you in term 3!
