Practising Self Compassion

We can often ignore our feelings and be kind to everyone, but forget to take time to put ourselves first.

Teaching ourselves to practise self-compassion is important in order to enhance and manage our own mental health and overall wellbeing.

If something doesn't go your way, or you make a mistake – instead of being hard on yourself, you can try to treat yourself with kindness and understanding.

There are three steps to practising self-compassion:

Self-Kindness

This means being gentle with yourself. Instead of getting upset or criticizing yourself, be supportive and caring. Think about how you comfort a friend who is upset—self-kindness is doing that for yourself.

Humanity

Remembering that everyone fails, makes mistakes and goes through rough patches. It's normal and part of being human. Having a reminder that you are human, and you will make mistakes like everyone else, so you can be compassionate to yourself.

Mindfulness

Being able to recognise your own emotions and how they affect you – regardless if its positive or negative. Practising some mindfulness like meditation or grounding when feeling overwhelmed, can be helpful and apart of practising self-compassion.
