Year 2 News

During Harmony Week, Year 2 had a fabulous day doing rotations where we moved from classroom to classroom. In each classroom we visited different countries such as Indonesia, Netherlands, Taiwan, England, Botswana and Japan. We enjoyed activities linked to their cultures like traditional foot bathing, constructing canal homes, making red envelopes and virtual tours.

Year 3 News

Last week our Year 3 students had an exciting time exploring democracy and voting. During an incursion "Democracy, Community, and Me," they learned about the preferential voting system in Australia.

They had a pretend election where they acted as candidates and learned about preferential voting. They also had a pretend council meeting where they talked about changing a local rule. It was great to see them thinking and talking about how things work in our community

Our students did a fantastic job learning about democracy and how they can be part of it. We're proud of them and can't wait to see them keep learning and growing.

Harmony Day 2024

Harmony Week is the celebration that recognises our diversity and brings together Australians from all different backgrounds. It’s about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone. To celebrate Harmony Day, the year 3 students reflected on the question: What makes our families unique? Students brainstormed and shared one thing that makes their family unique. Acknowledging the diversity of our families was one way of students getting to know each other better and celebrating our differences.

Year 4 Camp

Many students enjoyed going to PGL Campaspe Downs on March eighteenth until March twentieth. Students enjoyed the many activities such as the flying fox, the possum glider, raft building and archery. In the raft build, students were encouraged to work in a team of five to use barrels and rope to build a raft. After students had built their raft, they rode it across the lake. A number of students fell into the water which was lots of fun!

In the possum glider, a student would get into a harness and get tied to a rope. The rope was slung over a pole. The students' peers would pull on the rope to hoist the student into the air. The student would swing around in the air.

At seven fifteen in the morning, the students would walk to the dining hall and line up outside. After the host arrived all the students would walk inside, grab a tray and collect all the food they wanted. For breakfast there was a wide range of scrambled eggs, yoghurt, baked beans, hash browns and cereal.

At five fifteen, the students would again line up outside the dining hall for dinner. For dinner we had pasta and tacos. For dessert we had chocolate cake and vanilla ice cream. At nine thirty it was lights out.

Harmony Week

Harmony Week is an annual event, which celebrates multiculturalism and the differences that make us all so unique. It is about respect, inclusivity, and a sense of belonging for everyone.

Harmony week raises awareness of the importance of respecting others and stopping discrimination.

It's a week to remember and show our respect for all cultures around the world. It helps us acknowledge what discrimination is. NLPS students learnt that people are discriminated every day based on their culture, religion, beliefs, appearance, age, or gender.

The first Harmony Day was held on the 21st of March 1999 and was so successful that it was extended to become a whole week of celebrations.

The 21st of March was chosen to celebrate Harmony Day because it coincides with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

NLPS celebrated Harmony Day on Friday 22 March by learning about different cultures through a scavenger hunt. On this day NLPS wore a touch of orange which symbolises the dialogue we have about why discrimination is not OK.

“We learnt about different cultures and countries we didn’t know about. I loved it! I learnt that discrimination is all about how people can be cruel about peoples background, cultures and countries.”  - Charlotte

“It was really cool that we got to see objects from other cultures that we haven’t seen before.”  - Ramona

“I didn’t think there were so many countries in the world. We learnt that discrimination should be stopped because people shouldn’t be racist.” - Merehana

Parliament Day

On Thursday, the Year 5/6s had Parliament Day, an event that happens every second year.

A bill introduced in the House of Representatives was to ban animal testing. The bill got through the House of Representatives followed by a media press conference where the leaders of each party answered questions about the proposed bill.

The protesters had a wild time showing their support for the bill holding up the banners and chanting. Then The Senate approved of the bill and Governor General Leo gave his stamp of approval.

He shared some funny stories about his time as a reporter. We had a quick-fire question time where students were able to ask questions about his job.
