Green Team News

On Saturday, 9th March the annual Red Hill Show was held. This is an Agricultural show, the only event of its kind on the Mornington Peninsula. Every year thousands of people attend the Red Hill Show to enjoy a great family day and be part of this wonderful community celebration.

This year, the Green Team decided to exhibit some of their sensational  vegetables they had planted and nurtured over the past four months and we were thrilled with the results;

Cos lettuce - FIRST

Green beans - FIRST

Eggplants - SECOND

Tomatoes - THIRD

We also entered cherry tomatoes, marrow and sweet capsicums which did not win any prizes but looked impressive on the display table.

This week in Brendan’s Garden the Green Team admired their fantastic work planting radish, broccoli and brussel sprout seeds two weeks ago. Their observations were interesting; the radish seeds had germinated the fastest, taking only two days. The broccoli seeds took six days to germinate and the brussel sprout seeds took ten days to germinate.

The team also tendered to the seedlings they had planted two weeks ago.

Some of the tasks they completed were weeding, watering and mulching.

The growth of the beetroot and radish were impressive and we all agreed they must have liked the hot weather on the previous weekend. There was also plenty of produce to be harvested, which is a favourite task for the team. We harvested capsicums, tomatoes and eggplant and it won’t be long until some lettuce are ready for picking.

The final activity the team undertook was taking Rosemary cuttings to grow new Rosemary plants.

Here are the steps they followed:

  1. Cut off a section of stem about 12 cm long.
  2. Remove the lower leaves -pull off the leaves on the lower half of the shoot so you have a bare stem.
  3. Place the stem in a jar of water and wait for the roots to grow.

Stay tuned next term to find out if our cuttings were successful.
