  Greg Van Es

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I take this opportunity to thank students and families for their support in our efforts in Term 1 to improve Positive Behaviours for Learning through raising our expectations on attendance, behaviour, uniform and mobile phone use. Below I have again outlined the key information on these topics to continue to highlight their importance to us as a College but also the important role they play in our students being able to successfully engage with their learning.

Daily, school attendance is important for young people to succeed in education, and to ensure they don’t fall behind both socially and developmentally. Young people who regularly attend school have better health outcomes, better employment outcomes, and higher incomes across their lives.

Normal school hours for attendance are 8.50 a.m. for Homeroom and 3.20 p.m. finish. The College's Contemporary Learning Centre (CLC) is open from 8 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. Monday to Thursday and 4.30 p.m. on Friday. Students who have Study periods in their timetable are still expected to attend school at normal times and attend the CLC for these times. Students who are regularly late for the start of Homeroom or classes will be issued with consequences where that time is made up during recess, lunchtime or at a Behaviour Support Clinic after school on a Thursday afternoon.

I thank those families and students who regularly adhere to the requirements of our uniform and grooming requirements at the College. In Term 2 we change to our Winter Uniform. Boys are able to wear shorts or trousers, shirt, tie, jumper and blazer. Girls are able to wear shorts or trousers or tunic, school shirt, tie, jumper and blazer. A reminder that the College shell jacket is part of the Sport Uniform and should not be worn with the formal College uniform. White socks should be worn with shorts and dark socks with trousers. If you require new pieces of uniform you can contact Academy Uniforms via their website at Academy Uniforms Home

We will continue to work alongside students and families to ensure that uniform and grooming is consistent for all students within the College.

The focus on uniform complements our learning programs, and while it may seem more important to focus on classroom programs, adherence to our expectations is equally important and this is why we will continue to enforce the uniform policy.

We will continue to refine our Positive Behaviour expectations for students in classrooms with strategies that support the best opportunities for learning. We will establish a whole school model that allows for consistent language and actions so that all students are able to achieve positive engagement in a classroom.

The College Student Mobile Phone Policy is designed to ensure St John’s Regional College complies with the eleven minimum Child Safe Standards in line with Ministerial Order No1359. As educators, we have a mandatory obligation to create a culture which prioritises a safe, nurturing community for every child. The Standards provide a framework for routinely reviewing and strengthening child safety strategies, policies and practices. This policy outlines the requirements of the Minister for Education relating to students using mobile phones during school hours.

Students who choose to bring mobile phones to school must have them switched off and securely stored during school hours. Mobile phones are not permitted to be brought to class and are to be stored in lockers during school hours.
