SPORT NEWS: YEAR 8

YEAR 8 GIRLS SOCCER

The Year 8 Girls Soccer Team has had another excellent run in their inter-school competition this year, not losing a single game across district, SMR & State Finals due to their strong personal and team development.

In the State Finals last Wednesday, the girls were in red-hot form in their pool games against Keilor Downs and Colac. Unfortunately, their run was cut short due to weather during their final pool game against Northcote and no finals were held.

Congratulations to all the girls for showing significant maturity and resilience under difficult circumstances, and consequently representing the school incredibly well. We are very proud of their performance, both on and off the field.

A big thank you to our staff, student helpers and parents who have supported the team again this year.

YEAR 8 SMR TENNIS

The Year 8 Boys and Girls Tennis team competed at Pakenham in the Southern Metropolitan Region Finals on Thursday 12 September. Without having dropped a match in the Kingston Division, the question had to be asked, "Could they do it on a warm breezy day in Pakenham?" The answer was a convincing yes.

The boys team consisting of Frankie Hillier, Timeo Massenet , Emir Zmak and Nayuta Tsuchiya dominated the day without much fuss. The quartet of An Higuchi, Olivia Takada, Stella Thakrar and Ivy Medina made up the girls team; they steam rolled the competition by playing some high quality tennis.

Both teams did not drop a set and look primed to go against the other schools in the upcoming State finals. We wish them all the best next term.

YEAR 8 KINGSTON DIVISION TABLE TENNIS FINALS

The Year 8 Table Tennis Boys and Girls team competed at the Gala Day in Dandenong; the Boys A Team of Nayuta Tsuchiya, Ren Nagayama, Oliver Leung and Jayden Ma were raring for the opportunity this year to begin their state title defense.

The Boys B team consisting of Dishan Shanmuganathan, Cooper Neal, Kai Ramensky, Chase Leech, Ryan Le were keen to prove their worth against the other schools.

The Girls A team of Alex Mandjian, Yina Zhou, Laura Lu, Nikhita Bharathy, Isabel Halvorsen and Jesica Li  were hoping to progress to the SMR finals having narrowly missed out in 2023.

Across the day, McKinnon dominated against all other schools and did not drop a single match up. The boys final unexpectedly matched the McKinnon A and McKinnon B teams together; whilst there were a few close games, the class of the A team prevailed. They will be moving onto the SMR finals.

The girls also performed strongly across the board and managed to sweep their opposition in the finals. They too will be progressing to the next stage which will be held mid-term 4.

We wish both teams the very best with their matches moving forwards.

YEAR 8 GIRLS BASKETBALL

On Friday 13 September, the Year 8 Girls played in the finals for basketball. We arrived at Sandringham Secondary College where we first faced off against Sandringham in the first game of the round robin. We started off strong in the first quarter and continued to build momentum throughout the whole game. The girls ended up taking the win with the scores being 74 to 5 in our favor.

We then had a break as Sandringham played off against Parkdale. Watching close by, as our next game was against Parkdale, we knew that it would be a challenge from the previous encounter we had. Parkdale defeated Sandringham; therefore, the winner of the day would be determined in our game against Parkdale. During the game against Parkdale, the girls started off strong and continued to build throughout and ended up winning 64 to 23.

Congratulations girls on a fantastic term and bring on the next round!
