Wicked the Musical

On Sunday, 10th March, parents, students and friends all joined together to watch Wicked the Musical at Her Majesty’s Theatre. There were 132 tickets sold. It was a wonderful celebration of friendship with wonderful music and dancing. Wicked is a touching story of friendship that goes through hardships. All the students got dressed up and had a fabulous time.

Disney Welcome Dance

On Tuesday, 12th March, students in each year level performed 5 dances to their families. They have been learning these dances in Performing Arts for the last 6 weeks. The range of costumes were outstanding! For some of the students this was their first performance and they should be proud of all they have achieved. This was a wonderful way to start the year and a great opportunity to get to know other families at the school.

Australian Ballet

On Tuesday, 26th March, students in years 4-6 participated in a STEAM workshop with the Australian Ballet. They started off with a warm-up, playing the game Stop, Go, Up and Down. This game got your bodies and mind working as you walked around the space and had to think about opposite movements. They then spoke about the importance of breath, heart rate and posture.

As the students were going to watch Wonderland after lunch, the dance focus was on the characters from the show. They explored Mime and Gestures that are used in a dance to create character such as a crown for the Queen and the watch for the White Rabbit.

Language in dance is also important as it helps you know the names of different movements. All dance language is in French such as a saute meaning to jump or echappe meaning to escape or jump out and in. They worked through moving from one spot to another and body positions using angles, shapes, and line. Turning was practiced using spotting and pirouettes.

After lunch the whole school was invited to watch the ballerinas perform Wonderland.  We watched Alice twist and turn down the rabbit hole, to visit the Mad Hatter and the Nave of Hearts where she saved him from the Queen of Hearts before the Chesire Cat helped lead her home. The students were able to experience a ballet and how to tell a story without voice. They had amazing puppetry, as well as dance, to help tell the story using gestures for each character to help us identify them. There were only 5 ballerinas, they played multiple roles in the performance such as the flamingo, doors, cards as well as leads. What a wonderful way to finish the term.
