Celebrating happenings in our Community

Our multicultural community is something that we at highly value at Oakleigh PS. This year is our highest percentage of students born in a different country, just shy of 44%. This rich tapestry of cultures means that we have many of our families celebrating a variety of festivals over the year. We would love to recognise and learn about some of these celebrations. At the end of last term, I know at least one of our families was celebrating Persian New Year, Nowruz. It was lovely to hear and learn about this festival and how the family celebrates.

A couple of weeks ago signified the end of a month-long fast from sunrise to sunset for some of our families who then celebrated EID which is considered one of the most festive times of the year.

Living in Oakleigh we are also aware members of the Greek community will be celebrating Greek Easter on Sunday 5th May.

Our students have opportunities across their schooling to share with their classmates aspects of their culture and festivals as part of classroom programs. So, it would be lovely to share these festivals with the wider school community through the newsletter. I would like therefore to invite families to share with me any special days or festivals that they may be celebrating. Feel free to write with your child a short recount of how your family celebrated an occasion and forward it to my email.

MOTHER’S DAY STALL

When: Friday 10th May

This year Sylvia Tari has volunteered to coordinate one of the most loved events on the school calendar – the Mother’s Day Stall. Sylvia will be putting a call out for volunteers to help with set up on the day as well over the course of the morning. Please look at signing up if you can, to ensure its continued success again this year.
