Grade 1 Community News

Dear Grade 1 Families and Carers,

It has been wonderful to see all students engaging in their learning in Term 1. It has been a busy few weeks, and we are so excited to see the continued growth students have been making!

Let’s look at what our grade 1s have been learning.

Reading:

In Reading, students have been learning about fables as part of our Read2Learn program. Children have learnt about the features of traditional fables and have identified their morals. They have enjoyed listening to fables such as ‘The Boy who Cried Wolf’ and ‘The Goose and the Golden Eggs’. You may wish to read fables at home with your child and discuss the important morals within them.

Writing:

In Synthetic Phonics, we learnt that ‘ee’ says the long /e/ sound, /ee/ can be found in words like ‘bee’ and ‘street’. We are also learning that /oo/ can say both short sound /oo/ and long sound /oo/ such as in words like ‘hoop’ and ‘soon’. Our latest heart words that we have been learning include ‘move’ and ‘very.’ In Writing, we have started our new unit of Imaginative Text. Students have taken inspiration from a familiar story – Lost and Found by Oliver Jeffers, to plan, draft, revise, edit and publish their own narrative piece. Encourage your child to write a narrative at home and include its common features such as beginning to introduce the character and setting, middle to include the problem and feeling and ending to find the resolution.

Mathematics:

In Maths, we have begun our Place Value unit. Students have been provided with hands on experiences to develop their understanding of two digit numbers, by representing them with different materials such as icy pole sticks and unfix cubes.

Vocabulary:

In Vocabulary, we have been learning tier 2 words from our serial text ‘Fantastic Mr Fox written by Roald Dahl. Our vocabulary words from last week were oath, undefeated and dash. This week our vocabulary words are marvellous, feast and spluttered.

Health:

This term we have started our unit on Health. Students are learning how to keep healthy, stay safe and look after their wellbeing.

Friendly Reminders:

  • On Thursday March 21 we are celebrating Harmony Day. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to learn about different cultures. Students are encouraged to come dressed in their traditional dress and participate in activities which promote diversity and inclusiveness.
  • Please ensure your child is bringing their reading satchel to school with their wellbeing diary, so we can celebrate your child reading milestones.
  • Students are expected to wear their hats in the yard. Please make sure they come to school with a Tarneit Rise Primary School hat every day and that this hat is clearly labelled with your child’s name and grade.
  • Please ensure your child is only bringing water to school. Students are allowed to bring cut up fruit in containers to eat during learning time.
  • Lunch orders are available for students on Mondays and Wednesdays throughout the term and may be ordered through: https://classroomcuisine.com.au/

We thank you for your continued support of your child’s learning.
