PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Welcome Back to 2026

Welcome back to a new school year at Korumburra Secondary College. I hope all our families enjoyed a safe and restful break and are feeling refreshed for the year ahead. A special welcome to our new students and families joining us in 2026, and to the new staff who have become part of our school community—we’re delighted to have you with us. You can learn more about our new staff by reading their short bios in this edition of the newsletter or on our Facebook page. Both are also great places to stay up to date with upcoming events and school news.

It has been a very positive start to the year. I have visited many classrooms over the last week and have enjoyed seeing the wide variety of learning experiences that our dedicated staff have planned for students. It's been great to see students engaged in their classes and working with their peers.

As we begin the year, our focus is on setting strong routines that support learning and wellbeing. Regular attendance is one of the most important factors in student success, and in 2026 we are challenging our community to reduce the number of days students miss each term compared to last year.

Thank you to all families who recently completed the attendance survey—your feedback is valued and will help guide our work this year. The survey will close on Wednesday – check Compass for the QR code. Parents/carers are encouraged to contact the year level coordinator if you have any concerns about your child.  We also ask that families notify the school if your child is going to be absent so we can support attendance and wellbeing effectively.

Thanks to all our families who attended the Student 360s in the first two days of school. A large majority of our students attended, and we appreciate your support for this process, which really helps our students build positive relationships with their mentor teacher.

In the coming weeks students will set goals in class based on these discussions so the information gathered on our 360 days is recorded and owned by the students. Parents will be able to see these goals on Compass in the Insights tab.

Mentor teachers are an advocate for students at school and can support both students and families so please reach out if you have any questions.

If you need any help logging in to Compass please give our friendly team a call and ask for the IT department. It is an easy process for us to reset parent passwords for you and we encourage anyone who can’t access Compass to let us know so we can support you.

There is already plenty of excitement building, with our whole-school Swimming Carnival coming up on Thursday. This is always a fun day for the entire school community, with house colours on show, novelty events in and out of the water, and lots of ways to be involved even if swimming isn’t your thing. We strongly encourage all students to attend and take part, and parents are welcome to come and watch the events.

I would also like to congratulate former Year 12 student Rhiannon Rawlins, who was recently named Young Citizen of the Year. This is a wonderful achievement and a testament to Rhiannon’s contribution to the community. We are incredibly proud of her and the positive example she sets for our current students.

Today, our Year 7 students enjoyed an engaging recruitment session for the Instrumental Music Program, discovering more about the South Gippsland Schools Music Program (SGSMP) and the many instruments available to learn. For more information and photos, see the SGSMP page in this issue of the newsletter.

I look forward to working closely with you all in 2026 as we continue to support every student to learn, grow and thrive.
