Dear Families,

It’s exciting times at BNWPS as always. With the new year starting, we are exploring and learning about how our bodies move in Physical Education (P.E.). We will also be learning about aspects of health, such as nutrition and the importance of a balanced diet.

Over the next 4-6 weeks, students will participate in a Functional Fitness Program

What is Functional Fitness?

In simple terms

Functional fitness means learning and practising movements we use in everyday life.

These include:

  • Squatting, bending, lifting
  • Running, jumping, stopping
  • Balancing, throwing, catching
  • Pushing, pulling, crawling

The focus is on moving well, safely, and confidently, not being the strongest or fastest. Functional fitness teaches children how to move well for everyday life, not just sport.

Why is it important?

  • Helps children grow strong and coordinated
  • Supports confidence and independence
  • Builds healthy habits early

How does it benefit families and the community?

  • Children are more confident joining sports and activities
  • Encourages active play at home and in the local area
  • Builds respect, teamwork, and safety awareness

Benefits

  • Better posture, balance, and coordination
  • Reduced injury risk
  • Improved confidence and wellbeing
  • Enjoyment of movement, not pressure

Are there any risks?

  • Very low when activities are guided and safe
  • Children are encouraged to work at their own level

Where can it lead?

  • Lifelong enjoyment of physical activity
  • Participation in sport, recreation, and outdoor play
  • Healthier, more active families and communities

Key Message:

Functional fitness helps children move well, feel confident, and care for themselves and others. It supports a safe, inclusive, and happy school community, while building skills students will use for life.
