Grade 5

The year has begun with a very positive start as students have taken time to revisit class expectations and our PROUD values. Together, we have discussed what respectful, responsible, and safe learning looks like, and students have shown a strong understanding of the high standards expected in Year 5. By reinforcing these expectations early, students are building a supportive and focused classroom environment where everyone can learn and succeed—and they’ve stepped up to the challenge brilliantly.
Year 5 students have made a fantastic start to the year, settling quickly into routines and approaching their learning with enthusiasm and maturity. In English, students have begun reading War Horse by Michael Morpurgo, engaging thoughtfully with the text and developing an understanding of how horses were used during times of war. This unit is supporting rich discussions around history, empathy, and the impact of war on both people and animals.
In Maths, students have been focusing on Data, where they are learning how to create, read, and analyse dot plots. They have shown strong engagement and growing confidence as they interpret information and explain their thinking. Overall, Year 5 has started the year with a positive attitude and a strong work ethic—an excellent foundation for the learning ahead.
In Social and Emotional Learning, students have been focusing on understanding and identifying emotions. They have been learning how to recognise their own feelings, understand how emotions can change, and develop strategies to manage them in positive ways. These lessons are helping students build empathy, strengthen relationships, and create a calm, respectful learning environment—big skills for growing humans.
