Grade 3

Maths

This week in Maths we have been working on our knowledge of Place Value. Students have been working in small groups to play maths games to read, write and name 6 digit numbers. Students have begun to identify strategies on how to tell if a number is greater or less than another number. Students have demonstrated our PROUD Value of Daring but facing new challenges and giving the task their personal best!

Literacy

To kick off the year, we have started our first novel studies with the book, Matilda by Roald Dahl. Through the first three lessons, we read through Chapters 1 to 4.  During each lesson, we stopped to discuss how the text is organised, identified language cues and checked for understanding.  Students were introduced to Frayer Models, then created their own to help unpack the meaning of vocabulary words such as formidable, nimble, tremendous and drastic.

Throughout the week, students also worked on their use of conjunctions to join sentences using the words ‘because’, ‘but’, and ‘so’. In writing, students learnt about the structure of narratives, then began to write the introductions to their own stories with the inclusion of characters and setting.
