F/1 LS- AROUND THE CLASSROOM
Over the first four weeks of term in Maths, we have been building strong number foundations and confidence with numbers to 10 for Foundation students and numbers to 20 for Year 1 students.
Students have been practising counting to ten and back, as well as carefully counting collections to five and then to ten. We have explored how to represent numbers 0–5 on a five-frame and numbers to 10 on a ten-frame, helping children see numbers in different ways. The class has also been matching collections to their numerals (0–10 and 10 - 20), comparing which groups have more or less, and adding “one more” to collections up to five.
We have worked on reading and writing the numerals 0–5 in stages (0–2, then 3–5) and developing our subitising skills - recognising small quantities to five without needing to count.
It has been wonderful to see the students growing in confidence as they explore, represent and talk about numbers in a variety of hands-on and engaging ways
1/2CS - AROUND THE CLASSROOM
🔢 Maths is in Full Swing in Our Classroom! 🎉
We have been busy mathematicians over the past few weeks!
Our learning journey has taken us into the world of data, where students have been collecting information and turning it into tally graphs and picture graphs. We’ve been learning how important clear titles and keys are, and how they help others understand the information we are sharing. It has been wonderful to see students confidently reading and creating their own graphs!
We are now exploring the exciting world of place value. Using tens frames, hands-on materials and concrete resources, students are discovering how numbers are made up of tens and ones. We’ve been building numbers, breaking them apart, matching numerals, and explaining our thinking like true mathematicians.
Our classroom has been full of rich maths talk as students work with partners, play engaging games, and practise new skills. Hands-on learning helps concepts “click”, and worksheets allow us to record and reflect on our thinking.
It’s been fantastic to see confidence growing as students practise, persist, and celebrate their learning. We are so proud of the way they are approaching maths with curiosity and enthusiasm! 🌟
3/4AE - AROUND THE CLASSROOM
In English, we have been refining our handwriting skills. We have also introduced reading fluency sessions, where students read a familiar text with a partner to build confidence, accuracy and expression.
Students have been working on expanding their sentences by including fronted adverbial phrases and adding a reason using the conjunction because.
We are really enjoying reading Kensuke’s Kingdom and will soon begin writing our persuasive text together.
5/6- AROUND THE CLASSROOM
In English, Year 5/6 have been diligently finishing off and publishing their holiday writing.
We have also enthusiastically begun our novel study of A Ghost in My Suitcase. Students have been exploring the characters and key events in each chapter, making thoughtful connections and responding to discussion questions to deepen their understanding. They have also been practising their reading fluency with partners to build confidence, accuracy and expression.
Alongside our novel work, we have been strengthening our spelling and grammar skills. Students have been learning about sentence expansion, which includes adding detail to make their writing more engaging and precise. We have also begun exploring etymology to understand where words come from and how this helps with spelling and vocabulary development.
We are also continuing to develop joined handwriting and encouraging students to present their work neatly and thoughtfully.
