Bill Turner Trophy – Outstanding Team Performance
The girls did a fantastic job in their first Bill Turner Trophy game. They won 9–1, with Laura Stone, Charley Schwencke, and Lily Oellermen playing extremely well. The girls worked well as a team with no players on the bench and were extremely good sports to our opposition team, Barham.
MAG Athletes Shine at Independent Country Co-Educational Schools (ICCES) Athletics Carnival
MAG was represented at the Independent Country Co-Educational Schools (ICCES) Athletics Carnival on Thursday, 14 May, by our best performers from the MAG Secondary School Athletics Carnival held in March.
The competition was held at Victoria's premier athletics track, Lakeside Stadium in Albert Park, and it was the first time at this venue for many of our contingent. It was a great experience to be in a venue that is synonymous with quality performances.
Only one representative per field event and two per track event were able to compete in ICCES, meaning it was a smaller team than will attend the BISSA Carnival in Albury in July.
The highlights of the day included:
- Phoenix Wise winning the Year 10 Boys Overall Champion, with a win in the 100 m, 200 m and ribbons in the shot put and triple jump.
- A record in the Year 11/12 high jump for Hannah Downward with 1.64 m.
- A record in the Year 10 boys 200 m for Phoenix Wise with 23.05 seconds.
- Second place (out of eight schools) in the STAR Shield, which takes into account the size of the school.
Lots of ribbons and PBs across all year levels.
The weather was warm, and the students cheered and encouraged their schoolmates all day. It was great to hear the compliments from the other schools on the inclusion of MAG in the ICCES competition, as well as the calibre of our athletes. Congratulations to all who represented the school at Lakeside Stadium.
A sincere thank you to Mrs Moore, Mrs Frazer, Mr Grey, Mr Cadd, and Mr Downward for their support throughout the carnival. A huge thanks also to our Head of Athletics, Mrs Kate Downward, for her outstanding leadership, coordination, and dedication in preparing and supporting our students across the event.
Reminder: Track and field and cross country training is available through the MAG Athletics Squad at 7.45 am on Monday mornings at Jack Eddy Oval.
MAG Students Represent Riverina Anglican Schools at Combined Independent Schools (CIS) Championships
These four girls travelled to Sydney to compete in the 12 and Under Combined Independent Schools (CIS) Championships on Wednesday, 20 May, as part of the Riverina Anglican Schools (RAS) team. All performed really well, but unfortunately did not make it through to the next level of selection.
The RAS team finished third with six wins and three losses.
The Year 5/6 girls who participated were Halle Moon, Denny Moon, Elsie Stevens and Mea Whitelegg.
Senior Girls Football Competition – Albury
On Wednesday, 20 May, we took 19 girls from Years 10–12 to Albury to compete in the Senior Girls Football Competition.
After a great warm-up led by our illustrious captain, Grace, the girls faced their first opposition, Trinity Anglican College. Bella immediately showed her football prowess by stopping a certain goal within the opening 30 seconds of the match. Football novice Skyler then won a brilliant one-on-one contest to give us our first forward 50 entry.
With Trinity controlling possession for much of the game, our defensive unit was under constant pressure. However, the pressure led to several wayward shots from the opposition, who kicked five behinds to our two behinds in the first half. Tahlia, Jaiden and Charlie brought great tackling intensity and were rewarded with free kicks for their efforts. Eliza looked set for a certain goal before unfortunately missing the ball with her kick, but just when it looked like the game may have slipped away, our agile ruck, Jinaya, swooped in to collect the ball and slot an important goal.
With only two minutes remaining, Trinity gained a clearance and our defence was once again under pressure. Phoebe produced a ripping goal-saving tackle, much to the displeasure of her opponent. Soon after, the siren sounded, with our MAG girls securing a thrilling three-point victory.
We backed up immediately for our second game against St Paul’s. They were a very slick and well-drilled side, but our defensive pressure was again on display, with Bella winning a strong three-versus-one contest. Unfortunately, St Paul’s made the most of their opportunities and kicked very accurately, while we were limited in our scoring chances. We eventually went down by around six goals.
Our final match of the day was against Scots College. Apart from the opening and closing 30 seconds of the first half, where we conceded goals, we were largely in control. Paige got us started with a fantastic smother in the defensive half, while Tahlia and Jaiden once again proved to be stars with their tackling pressure. Jinaya, Grace and Bella then kicked back-to-back-to-back goals in the space of three minutes, giving us a one-goal lead heading into the final half. The second half was much tighter, with the Scots getting their hands on the ball more often. They capitalised on their opportunities, kicking two straight goals, while unfortunately, we could only manage three behinds.
Congratulations to all of our girls, who displayed outstanding spirit and sportsmanship throughout the day. A special mention must go to those brave students who do not normally play football but embraced the opportunity to try something new. We now look forward to the ICCES competition in Term 3, where we will once again have the chance to showcase our talents.
Senior Boys AFL – NSW Schools Cup Regionals
On Wednesday, 20 May, our Years 10–12 AFL Football team travelled to the Lavington Sports Ground in Albury to compete in the NSW Senior AFL Schools Cup Regional Playoffs against strong opposition from across the region.
The boys finished the day with one win and three losses; however, they represented our school with great determination, resilience and respect throughout the entire carnival. The team competed strongly in every match, showing excellent teamwork, effort around the contest and a willingness to support one another in challenging moments. Their positive attitude and sportsmanship were a credit to both themselves and our school community.
Special recognition goes to Jack Sara, Finn Murphy, Harvey Jackman and Harry Barlow, who were outstanding performers across the day. Each player consistently contributed through their skill, leadership, effort and commitment to the team.
Congratulations to all students involved for the way they conducted themselves both on and off the field. Thank you also to the staff and supporters who assisted throughout the day and helped make the carnival a success.
Under 16 Girls NSW State Basketball Championships
The Under 16 Girls Basketball Team recently travelled to Sydney to compete in the State Championships, proudly representing our school with determination, sportsmanship and outstanding teamwork throughout the tournament.
The girls showcased high-quality basketball across the four days, competing with energy, resilience and composure against some of the strongest school teams in the state. Their campaign culminated in a hard-fought semi-final, where they narrowly went down by just six points to a physically bigger and exceptionally well-drilled opposition. Despite the disappointment of falling just short of a grand final berth, securing an incredible third place in the state is an outstanding achievement of which we should all be immensely proud.
Beyond the results on the court, the greatest takeaway from the trip was the friendships strengthened, the memories created, and the endless fun and laughter shared between teammates. The girls represented the school superbly at all times and undoubtedly left their mark on the tournament, both through their basketball and their character.
A special thank you must go to Coach Luke Carnegie, Mrs Belinda Lees and Belinda Wright for their time, organisation, encouragement and commitment in making the trip such a memorable and successful experience for all involved.
Outstanding Equestrian Achievement for Year 8 Students
Moama Anglican Grammar proudly congratulates Year 8 students Skye Starritt and Zara O'Donnell on their outstanding achievements in qualifying for the Victorian Interschools Team to compete at the National Championships at Werribee Park National Equestrian Centre later this year.
Skye has qualified in both the EvA80cm and EvA95cm Eventing sections and will represent Victoria in the EvA95cm Eventing competition aboard her pony, Silverdene Mini Eclipse.
Zara earned the Championship title at the recent Victorian Interschools State Championships in the Intermediate 95cm Showjumping section riding Foxground Kahtia, securing her place on the Victorian team.
Congratulations to both girls, who have worked tirelessly as members of the MAG Equestrian Squad to achieve these incredible results. Their dedication, perseverance and commitment to their sport are to be commended, and the MAG community looks forward to following their success at the National Championships.
MAG is proud of all riders involved in the Equestrian Squad program and is excited to follow their continued success.
