Reading/Lettura in Foundation
In Foundation this week, we began our new Reading/Lettura goal; learning to read fluently so that we understand what we are reading/ Impariamo a leggere con fluenza per capire quello che leggiamo.
Students are excited to begin buddy reading with their Foundation peers, which will help them build confidence, fluency, accuracy and a love of reading in a fun and supportive environment. When reading, we encourage students to make their reading sound smooth and natural, rather than slow and robotic. We often say, “Read like a river, not like a robot” / ‘Leggi come un fiume, non come un robot’, to remind students to read with flow, expression and confidence.
How to Support your Child’s Reading/Lettura at Home
Families can support their child’s reading at home by:
- Encouraging them to start on the left and read from left to right
- Pointing to each word while reading
- Sounding out unfamiliar words and re-reading the sentence afterwards
- Re-reading familiar books to build fluency and confidence
- Asking simple questions about the story: Who is in the story?, What is the story about?, Where is the story set?
- Celebrating their reading efforts
Term 2 Unit of Work: Sustainability
In Unit of Work this term, our overarching topic is Sustainability. Students have begun exploring biodiversity and learning about living and non-living things / esseri viventi e non viventi in our environment. We have also started important conversations around sustainability and how we can care for our world through everyday actions such as having a waste free lunch box. Our end of term task will be growing vegetables in the classroom and celebrate where food comes from.
100 Days of School Celebration
In Foundation, we are now over halfway towards our 100 Days of School Celebration. The Foundation students have been enthusiastically counting each day of learning (since day 1), and we look forward to celebrating this important milestone together on July 15th!
Stay tuned for more information.
