Learning, growing and celebrating together...

Dear Sacred Heart Kew Families,

Winter is here. Rug up everyone. We’re already 5 days into winter and don’t we know it…

As the mornings become a little darker and the jumpers come out of the cupboard, winter arrives with its own special rhythm in school life. While it can be tempting to grumble about cold toes, foggy mornings and the challenge of getting out of a nice cosy and warm bed, winter also offers us many wonderful opportunities as a school community.

Winter invites us to slow down just enough to appreciate the simple things. It reminds us to appreciate the warmth around us. The warmth of friendship, family, learning and community. In a busy world, winter quietly encourages us to reconnect with what matters most. At school there is something special about children arriving rugged up in scarves and beanies, warm smiles greeting each other at the gate, and classrooms buzzing with learning while rain taps gently on the windows. It is a season that also reminds us of the importance of warmth, not just from heaters, hot chocolates and warm heart soups, but from kindness, friendship and community spirit.

Winter can be a wonderful time for growth. Children often settle beautifully into routines during these cooler months, showing persistence and resilience as the term progresses. It is also the perfect season to curl up with a good book, develop new skills, and enjoy the many indoor activities that bring creativity and collaboration to life. Sport during winter also teaches us valuable lessons. Whether it is muddy football boots, cheering from the sidelines, or remembering where we left our raincoat, children learn teamwork, determination and the importance of showing up, even when conditions are less than perfect.

Perhaps one of the greatest gifts of winter is that it reminds us to look after one another. Winter brings out some of the best qualities in people. A friendly smile, helping someone carry their bag in the rain, or simply checking in on a classmate, can make an enormous difference. In many ways, the colder weather helps bring people closer together. There is something about cold mornings that encourages kindness as we gather together in warm classrooms full of laughter and conversation. Winter has a wonderful way of bringing communities closer together.

So as we move through this winter season, may we embrace all that it offers, the opportunities to learn, moments to connect, reasons to laugh, and reminders to care for one another.

Wishing all families a warm, healthy and joy-filled winter season and a lovely long weekend. See you all again on Tuesday 9 June.

Kind Regards,
