What's happening in the classroom

Foundation
On Tuesday 26th May, Foundation and Grade 2 students travelled by bus to the Wangaratta Performing Arts Centre. Students watched the show "Where is the Green Sheep?" which was an immersive visual theatre experience based on the beloved children’s book by Mem Fox and Judy Horacek, featuring puppetry, animation, and interactive storytelling. The show followed the Blue Sheep, Red Sheep, Bath Sheep, and Bed Sheep as they searched for the elusive Green Sheep, engaging students in a playful and magical adventure!
Foundation students have been busy learning all about Digital Systems. They designed their very own robots, thinking carefully about the materials they would need and the task their robot would perform (e.g., cleaning their bedroom!). They brought a range of recyclable materials from home to bring their creations to life. There was great excitement and creativity as boxes, bottle tops, tubes, and foil were transformed into unique robot designs.
Grade 1
In Maths, we have been practising creating and solving addition and subtraction equations using dice. Students worked on writing number sentences correctly and using the appropriate mathematical symbols (+, -, =) to represent their thinking. This hands-on activity helped build number skills, problem-solving abilities, and confidence when working with equations.
Grade 2
In grade 2 we have been learning lots about computers. We have done a range of things on the computers to practice our skills including writing our stories on a word document, creating slideshows on different topics or making posters from our own research on Green Sea Turtles. The student's skills are really growing, and they are becoming more independent and confident.
We have been practicing making our tricky words in a range of different ways. The students love writing tricky words and then using their memory to make these tricky words out of different tools. They are learning that the more they write/make our tricky words it will stick in their brains!
In RRRR we have been learning all about our emotions including worry and anger. We are practicing identifying what things may trigger these emotions and how we can be problem solvers to make us feel better when we have these emotions. The students are doing a great job providing each other with different ideas to tackle our emotions.
Grade 3
The Grade 3s have been working hard to finish off term 2! We have been studying poetry and more difficult addition and subtraction strategies in maths. During reading we have learnt about open and closed syllables, the 'dropping e' rule and read some wonderful poems by Banjo Patterson and CJ Dennis.
We hope everyone enjoys their winter holiday break. Can't wait to see you all back ready for Term 3!
Grade 4
Recently Grade 4 have enjoyed some Science lessons with our key question being - How does water move through the ocean, sky and landscape?
In our lessons, students have begun to identify different sources of water and describe some of the processes in the water cycle, including movement of water through the sky, landscape and ocean. Students have been exploring and identifying everyday examples of evaporation, condensation and precipitation.
We set up an experiment called "can you make rain fall?" This simple experiment was helping to show the movement of water by placing some water in the bottom of a sealed bag and observing what happens when that water warms and cools. This was lots of fun and we have been using our skills of observation.
We have also been thinking about where tap water comes from and predicting what happens to water that goes down the drain. As part of our focus on water, we have been thinking about why we should save and recycle water.
Grade 5 and 6
On Monday 22 June, more than 80 of our Year 5 and 6 students proudly represented our school at the Winter Sports Day competition. Students competed in AFL, netball, and soccer, demonstrating excellent teamwork, determination, and sportsmanship throughout the day.
Our teams performed exceptionally well, with many progressing through to the semi-finals. Although we narrowly missed out on places in the Grand Finals, the effort, skill, and resilience shown by all students was outstanding.
We are incredibly proud of the way our students represented our school. A big thank you to the families who came along to support the teams, and to our staff for their time and dedication in coaching, managing, and encouraging students throughout the event.
Congratulations to all students on a fantastic Winter Sports Day!
Lions Public Speaking Competition
Throughout the term there has been a very dedicated group of students from grades 3 - 6 who have shown independence and responsibility in choosing to participate in this year's Lions junior public speaking competition. Public speaking is often a challenging thing for people of all ages to do, so this has been a great opportunity for students to develop their public speaking skills in a safe and supportive environment. Students are provided with a topic to base their speech on, with Grade 3/4 presenting for 3 minutes, and Grades 5/6 presenting for 4 minutes. A series of rounds were completed in front of classmates and teachers, in which 5 students from each category were chosen to present to the Lions Club of Benalla. Congratulation to Stella Ellis for winning the Grade 3/4 group, and to Hannah Paul for winning the Grade 5/6 group. The next stage of the competition will take place during the holidays, with Macey Symes filling in for Stella Ellis. We wish both girls the best of luck.
Casual Clothes Day
On the last day of Term 2, we had a casual clothes day. Students were encouraged to wear green and gold to support the Soccoroos on their quest for the World Cup. Students also got to live stream the game in their classrooms. It was a great day had by all!
