Learning News - Term 2, Weeks 7-8

Science

K/1

This term in Science and Technology, our K/1 students have been exploring the world around them through hands-on learning and investigation. We have been learning about digital devices and their purposes, identifying different technologies we use in our daily lives and discussing how they help us learn, communicate, and complete tasks.

Students have also been investigating living and non-living things. Through observations, discussions, and sorting activities, they have learned about the characteristics of living things and how they differ from non-living objects. It has been wonderful to see students asking questions, sharing their ideas, and developing their scientific thinking as they explore the world around them!

Year 2

Our Year 2 students have been having a wonderful time diving into our new Science and Technology unit, "Sound Journey", where they have spent time exploring how sounds are produced and changed. We began our journey by observing vibrations on a speaker and touching our own throats while humming to discover that all sounds come from rapid back-and-forth movements. From there, the children became hands-on investigators, testing how sound travels through different materials and conducting an experiment to see how distance affects volume as sound moves through the air. Most recently, our little scientists have been comparing pitch and volume by exploring virtual piano keys and using everyday items to design, build, and test their very own musical instruments!

Year 3

Tech Time with Mr Copland! 🚀

Our Year 3 students have been diving headfirst into the cool world of technology in Digital Systems and Data Representations! Led by the fantastic Mr Copland, our young tech-explorers are discovering how gadgets use their "senses" through input devices like keyboards and touchscreens to take in information, and output devices like screens and speakers to talk back to us. But we aren't just looking at screens—the class is playing data detectives to see how real-world professionals use data as a superpower every single day. They’ve discovered that video game developers track player stats to design better levels, doctors analyse health charts to save lives, and sports coaches study game data to win matches!

Year 4

Over the last few weeks Year 4 have started their design and production unit called “All Shook Up”. In this hands-on engineering unit, students explore how natural forces shape the Earth's surface, specifically focusing on earthquakes. Adopting the role of structural engineers, they are designing, creating, testing and evaluating a prototype model of an earthquake-resistant building. We have had lots of fun so far with this unit, testing our foundations using jelly and the strength of materials and joins. We look forward to testing our structures.

Great work Year 4

Year 5/6

Over the past few weeks, stage 3 students are diving deep into the fascinating world of the human body to explore how our body systems coordinate for survival. Students identify the main organs and functions of the digestive, respiratory and circulatory systems. To bring learning to life we are testing and investigating exactly how our circulatory and respiratory systems respond to physical activity. We have integrated Science and PDHPE this term, learning new concepts about our body we didn’t understand before. We are having a fantastic time exploring the science of the human body! Ask your child what they have discovered about their body systems this week - you might be surprised!
