Science

Students have continued to explore biology this week.

Grade 5/6

Students have been designing animals with adaptations so they could survive on another planet. This helped students consider what they learned about a specific planet last term and merge it with what they have learned about plant and animal adaptations this term.

Grade 3/4

Students did an investigation into decomposers. They set up a small bag with half of a tomato at the bottom, a thick layer of dirt, and half a tomato on the surface. We will watch these bags over the next few weeks and see how decomposers affect these tomatoes.

Grade 2

Students have begun making stop motion videos. They planned, made and recorded an Australian animal, focusing on their features and how they help them survive. These videos will be available on students' specialist portfolios by the end of the Term.

Grade 1

Students have been learning about the basic needs of animals; food, water, shelter, and air. They learned what an artificial environment is (like zoo enclosures) and how to design these to meet an animal's needs.

Prep

Students have learned how to look closely at plants and animals and identify their specific features. This week students drew a plant and an animal and identified features they have which are different and similar.

In the garden

Our tomato plants are beginning to die back, though many are still developing ripe fruit. We used many of the fallen tomatoes in our veggie patch for our Grade 3/4 science experiment. What a great free resource we have here at school!

Garden club members have begun planting winter veggie seeds, like lettuce and peas.

And remember mighty scientists; look closely, ask freely, and seek answers to Earth's cool and crazy wonders!
