Year 1/2 Mainstream

Celebrating Learning

Integrated- What we have been up to:

What a fabulous community turnout for our 1/2 Light and Sound Shadow Puppet Show. The students were so excited to share their learning of light and sound and retells with you all. Thank you to everyone who attended. Our movie - pizza night was also a huge success. Thanks to the staff, parents and students for their support on such a wonderful night!

As the term winds up, Year 1/2 classes are finishing off the integrated focus on ‘Light and Sound’. Children have been making shadow boxes, running experiments and making lots of sounds themselves because they are so excited about the holidays!

Next term we will be investigating chemical reactions! Watch out for more information coming early next term.

Maths:

Students finished off their multiplication and division journey with more division stories and multiplication games. Fast Facts continued, and we have been excited to see how many students have taken on a desire to improve. Thank you to all the parents who have supported their children at home with fast facts practise. It really does make a difference in how students see themselves as learners. We have also been exploring our understanding of mass, by comparing objects' weight through hefting. You may want to ask your child to show you and explain what and how ‘hefting’ works.

Literacy:

Grade 1/2 children (and teachers!) were so pleased with the culmination of our reading and integrated units in our puppet show performances at the end of Week 8. Classes have been practising retelling skills in reading during Term 3 and applied their new knowledge and understanding of light and sound to create shadow puppet performances of familiar Australian narratives and Dreaming stories.

It was such a treat for everyone involved to have parents and carers come along into our classrooms to enjoy all of our hard work, and we appreciate the extra effort many people went to give Grade 1/2 children an audience.

The authentic opportunity made this learning experience a whole lot more meaningful for lots of children. We have also wrapped up our new learning in writing about different types of poetry, including acrostic poems, cinquain poems, shape poems, and haiku poems.

Next term, we will begin to learn about persuasive writing and building arguments.
