Year 12 Student Leaders Welcome & Commissioning With Bishop Greg

Last Thursday, as the School Captains we represented Mary Mackillop Catholic Regional College in a discussion group with Bishop Greg of Sale, among other school captains with six other schools under the Catholic Diocese of Sale. Last year, we shared a Zoom meeting with the Bishop and other School Captains to gather ideas of how we would accompany one another as leaders and make our school a place of encounter. This gathering was now an opportunity to reflect on the year and not only share how we have made Mary Mackillop a place of encounter through our success, challenges and failures; but to hear from like-minded students to gather insight on how we can also implement their initiatives.

We all met at Marist Sion House in Warragul and began the day with a Welcome to Country and a short liturgy. Then we came to the objective of the day and shared our successes in making Mary Mackillop a school of encounter. We talked about the great day we had at the Walkathon and all the social justice targets we have achieved through fundraisers and raising awareness for those locally impacted by poverty and injustices. We shared our experiences with the Sydney JJAMM Conference, leadership teachings on Year 7 Camp and how all Youth Ministry classes throughout the year have achieved so much in working towards the common good.

Once the discussion was over, we gathered for lunch and snapped a few photos with Bishop Greg before leaving to head back to school.

Overall, the day with Bishop Greg and other school leaders was insightful, and we are so grateful to Mr Freeman, and Nia Robinson for taking us so that we had this opportunity to grow more as leaders and individuals. We hope to pass down this valuable knowledge to the School Captains of 2025, whoever they may be. - Dinisty Francis, School Captain

Year 10 Youth Ministry

On the 30th of August, our Year 10 Youth Ministry students hosted a memorable First Eucharist Retreat for the Grade 4 students from St Laurence, Leongatha, and St Joseph, Korumburra. The day was filled with joy, learning, and meaningful activities that helped the younger students prepare for their upcoming First Communion.

The retreat featured a range of engaging sessions, including making unleavened bread, creating a skirt for the altar, and reflecting on the significance of the Eucharist. The Grade 4 students participated wholeheartedly, exploring the deeper meanings behind the Eucharist and developing their understanding of this important sacrament. The Year 10 leaders guided each group with enthusiasm and kindness, ensuring that everyone felt included and supported.

Overall, the retreat was a great success, filled with laughter, creativity, and faith. Thanks and wholehearted congratulations to the Year 10 students for their leadership and organization of the event. - Scott Blencowe, Learning and Teaching Leader - Religious Education, Student Leadership and Social Justice Animator
