This fortnight, our Indonesian learning has tied in beautifully with the 100-Years Celebrations happening at Yarra Road. Students across all year levels have been exploring language and culture in ways that connect to both history and everyday life in Indonesia.
Our Prep students have started learning short sentences to describe jungle animals and their colours, as well as discovering the tradition of colourful masks. Years 1 and 2 have been singing and moving along to "Kepala, Pundak, Lutut, Kaki" (“Heads, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes”) and exploring traditional clothing from different regions. Prep to Year 2 students have also looked at some folk tales from Indonesia, including "Too Too Moo" and "The Mouse Deer and the Cucumbers.
The 3/4s have been practising sentences to describe rooms in the home, while also looking at the many different types of houses people live in across Indonesia. Meanwhile, Year 5 and 6 students have been learning how to talk about the weather and temperature in Indonesian.
Alongside these topics, students from Years 3 to 6 have also been looking back at important events in the last 100 years of Indonesian history. It has been a wonderful way to connect our school’s celebrations with our Indonesian learning, and to see how language and culture continue to shape communities over time.
Over the past fortnight, all classes have been busy practicing their dances for "Dancing Through the Decades". The students are feeling both excited and a little nervous as performance day approaches – a wonderful mix that shows just how much they care about sharing their hard work with you!
A big thank you to all families for your support in preparing costumes to match each era. Your efforts will bring the dances to life and add an extra sparkle to the students’ performances.
We are so proud of the dedication, energy, and teamwork the students have shown, and we can’t wait for you to see them shine on stage.
We look forward to a successful day on Saturday and hope to see you there!
Prep
During the last couple of PE sessions, the Preps have been working on AFL skills, mainly concentrating on handballing and basic kicking skills. It has been great to see their enthusiasm and determination when applying their skills to mini games.
Year 1 and 2
We have continued to practise our skipping skills while warming up, and I am pleased to see that they are really starting to show improvement with their skipping skills.
We have also been working on soccer skills, by experimenting with different parts of our feet, while we dribble and trap. We also worked on leading and passing to our partner. We finished our unit with a mini soccer game, where I witnessed some terrific skills.
Year 3 and 4
Today, the 3/4s concluded their skipping unit, and with great success. They have been spending the first 10 minutes of every session for the past few weeks working with a partner to develop a synchronised skipping routine. Every single child showed improvement in their skipping skills over the duration of the unit and I am so proud of their determination and creativity. Well done, guys!
Year 5 and 6
Last week we went down to the oval to practise our AFL skills ready for Footy Day. Students coached each other in ways to improve their handpassing skills, played a minor handpassing game, and then had time to work on their kicking skills.
District Athletics
While everyone has been busily preparing for our school’s 100-Year Celebration, we have also had a team of athletes training hard for the District Athletic Sports. On Tuesday, we ventured to Bill Sewart Reserve in Burwood to compete against nine other schools from across the Warrandyte South District. Fortunately, the drizzly weather cleared, leaving us with ideal weather conditions in which to compete. All of our team members put in outstanding performances, tried their very best at all times and displayed good sportsmanship along the way. Once scores were calculated, we discovered that we had finished in fourth place, narrowly missing out on third place. A terrific effort!
Several of our students managed to qualify for the Maroondah Division Championships to be conducted in Week 1 of next term. We wish them the best of luck.
We would like to thank Kim, Kylie, and Melissa for their wonderful assistance on the Long Jump event, and a special thank you to those parents who came along to cheer on our team.
The following table indicates those students who gained places at the District Event.
Preparing for Our 100-Year Anniversary
Our students have been busy getting creative and curious as we prepare for our school’s 100-Year celebrations! In STEAM, classes have explored how children played over the last century through fun science experiments and hands-on art. From testing how different materials move in the wind, to experimenting with sound, light, and patterns, students have discovered how science is part of everyday play.
Alongside the experiments, each class has been making art pieces inspired by games, toys, and designs from different decades. These works celebrate both the history of play and our school community. The final artworks and science displays will be showcased at our 100th Anniversary event - sharing the excitement, learning, and creativity of our students.
