Year 5 & 6
Around our level
The 5/6 building has been filled with excitement over the past few weeks as students prepare for Yarra Road’s 100-Years Celebrations. Along with decorating their classrooms, students have researched their allocated decade, designed projects, created objects, learnt dances, and showcased their creativity in many different ways. It has been wonderful to see them generating ideas and turning them into tangible pieces of work.
The classrooms are open to parents on Friday (12th September) from 11:15am - 12:15pm, and again on Saturday (13th September) to the wider community from 11am - 12pm. Hopefully, you get the chance to have a look at all their hard work. We have included more comments this week as students have written a variety of responses.
Tuesday was District Athletics. We congratulate every student for representing our school admirably. Overall, our school came fourth out of ten schools; an amazing effort.
5/6A
I learnt that Mc Donalds came to Australia in the 70s and I enjoyed making the red rattler train.
- Declan A
I learnt about the Vietnam War and the rise of digital technology as my decade was the 1970s. What I enjoyed about this project is learning about the Vietnam War because I have an interest in war.
- Cruze F
I have learnt lots of things about the 70s such as fashion, inventions, and many famous things. I have really enjoyed learning our dance as well and I can't wait for the performance!
- Ivy K
The whole class learned many interesting and confusing things. Many things from the 70s were different from now. I learned about how the first 50 dollar bill was created in the 70s, the Sydney Opera House was made in the 70s and so much more. One of my favourite events to learn about was the collapse of the West Gate Bridge in 1970 because my great grandpa helped build the West Gate Bridge and was there the day of the collapse. My great nanna didn't know if he was going to come home because they didn't have phones. I thought that was such an interesting connection and I loved how he helped make the bridge. The 70s were overall such a cool decade with the clothes and all the events that happened.
- Emily S
My class is doing the 1970s. I learnt that people wore a lot of bright coloured clothes, and there was a lot of hippie influence in the early 70s. There was a lot of great music, a lot of great clothes, and amazing hairstyles. I also learnt that in 1970, in America, the first Earth Day happened! I really enjoyed making posters about our decade, and researching about it. But I really like our class song which is, 'Stayin' Alive' by the Bee Gees, and we have a really cool class dance to that song! I think we got the best decade!
- Achala S
5/6B
We learnt about things that were invented or popular in the 1950s and we had to make a poster about it. We also made 3D objects like jukeboxes, TVs, burger boxes, chip boxes and apple pie boxes. We colored diner posters too. What I enjoyed was making and doing the dance for our class and practising it. My class dance was called the ‘Hand Jive’. So fun!
- Victoria C
I enjoyed making 3D containers and making a TV. I also enjoyed making a jukebox and coloring in my diner poster. I learnt a lot of things from my decade including when KFC and Pizza Hut were built. Yeah it was all really fun.
- Lachie I
I learnt that matchbox cars were invented in 1952. And I enjoyed doing my 3D TV and my 3D burger box and other things from the 1950s.
- Aaron L
While researching about the 1950s, I learnt so much. Did you know that barbie was released at a toy fair in New York? I also learnt that some of my favourite historical events were staged in the 1950s. I LOVED doing all the research, and I also loved making the 3D objects. (Especially My Super 'secret' Numbers) I will most definitely miss researching about the 1950s!
- Kaylea R
During the time that we were researching the 1950s I learnt that barbie was a popular toy and so were the magic 8 ball and lego. Though I loved the research, the hand on craft activities were my favourite part! We made 3D jukeboxes, diner fast food boxes and 1950s TVs. We also coloured in diner posters and made diner menus. I really love doing all the activities!
- Caitlin V
5/6C
Making 3D materials was awesome. I needed exact measurements and I made peace signs and kombi vans.
From what I learnt, I think that the 1960s was an easier time to live in.
- Jai F
I learnt that twisties were made in the 60s. Sweet Caroline was a famous song in the 60s and the band, the Beatles were very famous for their catchy music. A popular meal was a Sunday roast with Baked Alaska for dessert.
- Kade J
We are representing the 1960s. I have enjoyed many things but one of the things I have enjoyed the most was probably doing the big projects. The fun and laughter we have had and just everything really. It was a great time!
- Charlee R
In 5/6C, we are doing the 60s. I learnt that a lot of snacks that are still here today were invented in the 60s, things like Tim Tams and Pringles. I really enjoyed doing our research projects as well as making a lounge room diorama which we made out of cardboard and paper.
- Aisha R
It was really fun to be able to have fun and be creative in class. I learnt that the Sound of Music was made in the 1960s. We also got to make timelines about something that was different in the decades compared to now. I wrote about the differences between the food and house prices. We also got to create a dance based on our decade. Our class is doing, ‘Let’s Twist Again'. It's a very happy song from the 1960s.
- Lacey T
