Library News

Wow! What a time it has been in the library!
BOOK WEEK was a whirlwind of colour with José, Abner and Lucinda each hosting a story-time. Lucinda’s extended beyond the library, spilling onto the asphalt which became a vibrant ‘Concrete Garden’ with the kids inspired by Bob Graham’s book and armed with chalk. Abner put on a puppet show to many rapt kids. José spent his birthday recess sharing Spanish with the kids. Special guest Marc Martin showed us how his paintings became books and then he instructed us on how to draw some cute animals from basic geometry. The kids are still searching for the remaining 5 wandering Wallies!
Dress-up day was so exciting! There were so many exceptional costumes that were crafted with care and enthusiasm. I wish I had 436 prizes for all the students. An apology to Isla Palmer who was forgotten in my haste but did receive an award! A special shout-out to those who didn’t receive a prize but who dressed with such spirit: Whitney whose clever hat didn’t go unnoticed; Elsa and Frida who, like me, dressed as the principled Anne Shirley; Wren with her cupcakes; Caspar who was a character from a book he authored himself; Vera’s Pippi Longstocking; the ‘Stranger Things’ graphic novel kids in year 5; the Little Lunch gang in year 6; Fearne as Dorothy Gale; Bonnie as Mo Willem’s Pidgeon; Beatrix as Fantastic Mr Fox; Silky as one of the One Piece gang; Xanthie as one of the Rainbow Fairies; Arthur as a capybara; Albert for his Minecraft character; Cooper as Greg the Wimpy Kid; various unrecognisable kids in cardboard creations, and the grade 3-4 teachers looking resplendent and commanding as figures from Greek mythology and of course, Luke as the Lorax!
Tuesday’s SPANISH STORY-TIME with Abner has been a lot of fun. His enthusiasm and patience has been lovely to watch and the kids have been really enjoying it. Last week he left us wondering why everyone was treating Abuelita so rudely! Find out next Tuesday.
WEAR IT PURPLE DAY was celebrated with kindness and ease. One of my library regulars, Ada, asked to try her hand at hosting her own story-time. She read My Shadow Is Purple and Dim Sum Palace with poise and the students listened with generosity and respect. I suspect there will be language and books in your future, Ada!
READ-A-THON
Our dedicated library lovers have raised a mammoth $5800 to make our space even more special and to continue to provide recent releases and honour student book requests. I am so impressed by how many hours you spent reading. I loved hearing your favourite reads. The BFG and Philip Pullman’s The Northern Lights are excellent choices. Also, Val—you must tell me all about Death by Churros, I am intrigued! Special mention must go to Axel & Aviva, Nelly, Taylor, Matilda H, June S, Quinn TJ, Florence TJ, Mabel, Alice H, Lachlan S, Ramona Y, Leyla, Millie D, Nina, Pom, Lowri, Henk, and Bonnie.
All participants will be given a certificate in their classroom. Please contact me if your child joined in but didn’t receive their certificate.
Our highest readers will receive a Pictures & Pages book voucher at today’s assembly:
Prep: Frankie
Grade 1: Beatrix
Grade 2: Dash (and biggest fundraiser!)
Grade 3: Bracken
Grade 4: Mala
Grade 5: Rebecca
Grade 6: Eva
Excellent Effort: Ada (second highest fundraiser, 18 hours spent reading, borrower of the month, and story-time host!)
Thanks also to parents Marisa and Andrew for their support and kindness.
Hope you can all find some time for a book this weekend!
