Year 10 Outdoor Education: Community Environment Project

Our Year 10 Outdoor Education students recently teamed up with Max and Tamara from the NT government Weed Management branch to tackle buffel grass along the Charles River, just outside St Philip’s College. Despite the heat, students worked hard to clear the invasive grass, creating space for native plants to thrive and helping reduce the risk of fire.

This hands-on assessment gave students the chance to contribute to the local environment in a practical way, moving beyond the classroom to make a real difference. Year 10 Outdoor Education looks forward to continuing this active approach to learning throughout the year.

Student reflections:

“I thought it was going to be just another activity that we have to do for our assignments, but I found myself genuinely enjoying it”

“When we all came together and worked on the same area of buffel you could actually see the base of the tree and we managed to clear

about a metre around the tree”

“Pulling out lots of buffel grass is hard work, and it was much easier when we worked together, shared tools, and encouraged each other”
