Armidale Catholic Schools (ACS) Swimming Carnival - Gunnedah
On Friday 28th February, 12 students travelled to Gunnedah for the Diocesan swimming carnival.
The 12 students were Lucy Newberry, Ivy Watson, Eva Poschelk, Lucy Van Der Waal, Zara Correy, Phoebe Newberry, Maggie Doust, Harley McPhillips, Max Poschelk, Matt Peitsch, Kash McPhillips and Felicity Adams.
There were some tremendous results with three swimmers being selected for Polding in individual events and the senior girls relay team also making it into Polding selections.
Zara Correy was on fire and made selection in the following events:
- 2nd in 50m freestyle with a time of 36.08 which is a PB of 2.1 seconds.
- 1st in 50m breastroke with a time of 48.70 which is a PB of 2.6 seconds.
- 1st in 50m backstroke with a time of 47.22 which is a PB of 1.3 seconds
- 2nd in the 50m butterfly with a time of 45.29 which is a PB of 3.7 seconds.
Zara also received the age champion for the 11 years girls! This is an amazing achievement.
Maggie Doust, despite being a little under the weather on the day was still very impressive to watch and achieved selection in the following:
- 3rd in 50m freestyle with a time of 36.31 which is a PB of 1.08 seconds.
- 3rd in 50m breastroke with a time of 51.52.
Kash McPhillips who always puts the biggest effort into his training gained selection in the:
- 50m backstroke coming 2nd with a time of 47.58 which is a PB of 2.1 seconds.
The senior girls relay team consisting of Zara Correy, Phoebe Newberry, Felicity Adams and Maggie Doust gained selection for polding by coming second with an amazing time of 2.39.73. Amazing effort girls and such an exciting race to watch.
Other amazing results on the day:
Phoebe Newberry getting a 10.6 second PB in 50 freestyle.
Lucy Newberry coming in 4th and just missing a place at polding for 50m freestyle with a PB of 3.8 seconds.
Eva Poschelk grabbed an amazing PB of 5.8 seconds in the 50 freestyle and Zara Correy coming in 4th for the 200m IM with a whopping 20 second PB.
All students performed above and beyond expectation and their behavior and sportsmanship was a real credit.
It was a pleasure to be their supervising teacher.

Polding Cricket Trials- Claire Bailey
Playing for Polding at the NSW PSSA Cricket Championships in Tuggerah was a great experience for me. I had never played so much cricket in my entire life! I still can't believe that I have made it this far for my cricket.
I had a wonderful time playing two games each day, and having a laugh with my new friends that I made! Each day was tough as there were so many good teams that we had to verse. After each game we were all exhausted, they were all long days of cricket and the weather was very hot!
It was especially hard when we played Mackillop and Sydney North, but at the end of it our score was pretty good! I had taken two screamer catches and one bowled wicket with my bowling. My coach Kane said that my fielding was definitely my strong point and my nickname was "Golden Hands." When I told him and the girls it was my first ever full game of cricket, they were amazed!
My batting could have been a lot better but I am proud of myself for being out there one game and facing 35 balls.
On Thursday, the finals would have been the last game of cricket I would ever play with those wonderful group of girls! I was very disappointed that I couldn't play the last game because of the terrible wet weather that had come! Instead we all went to an indoor pool centre and had lots of fun in the rapid ride pool! I will never forget the experience I had playing for the Polding cricket team, because of the skills I learned and my amazing team mates.
ACS Winter Trials
The Armidale Catholic School Winter Trials has been postponed from today, the 7th March, to Friday the 28th March at the same venue. 21 of our Stage 3 students will be attending these trials. Sports our students are trialling for are; Rugby League (11s and 12s), Netball and Soccer. We wish these students all the best!
Kinder Tadpoles Carnival
On Wednesday, we saw our Kindergarten students participate in a Kinder Tadpoles Carnival at school. They took part in a range of activities involving transferring a ball from one place to another, throwing a ball through a target and land swimming (run/swim). These students earned points for their houses to contribute to our swimming carnival held earlier in the year. Thank you to our amazing Year 6 students who assisted their buddies and guided the students through their events. It was also wonderful to see some of our Kindergarten parents there, enjoying the afternoon.
Photos of this event are on the 'Adventures with Kinder' page!
After the Kinder Tadpole carnival, overall house points have been counted and added to the swimming carnival points. The results are as follows:
🥇MacKillop - 1302
🥈Penola - 1212
🥉Fitzroy - 1016
Congratulations to MacKillop house and to captains Lara and Sam .
Cross Country
With our fingers and toes crossed, we hope to hold our Cross Country event next Monday the 10th March at the Glen Innes Golf Club. If we need to postpone this event due to weather conditions, it will be held on Monday the 31st March. Naplan and School Photos prevent us from holding our carnival any earlier. For students in Years 3 to 6 who qualify for the Diocesan carnival, this will be held on Friday 4th April in Barraba. This is the same week as our school back up date.
Students are to wear their normal sports uniform on Monday and will wear it again for regular sport on Friday of the same week. We will have the Lions Van for the students to purchase lunch items, along with Floatin’ Around Coffee van for the adults operating again on the day. Students come to school as normal and will be transported to the venue by bus.
Parents who have offered to volunteer at the Cross Country will be contacted by myself with an outline of your role. Thank you very much for offering your time.
Working With Children Check
As you know, many of our big sporting events cannot run smoothly without the help of our amazing parents and grandparents. If you are interested in helping at our carnivals this year, can I ask that you please check the expiry date of your Working With Children Check and update if necessary. Also, if you do not have one and are keen to assist us, attached below is the link for you to apply for one. It is free to obtain as a volunteer.
The bonus of helping us at these days, is that we shout you all a coffee and we supply you with some home baked goodies from some excellent cooks in our school community. Have I sparked your interest now? Click on the link below.
