Calligraphy

Bringing Chinese Calligraphy to Life!

This week, our students had an exciting experience exploring the art of Chinese calligraphy! They started by practising on magic paper with water, carefully learning the brushstrokes for the characters 福 (fú – good fortune), 春 (chūn – spring), and 吉 (jí – good luck). Once they gained confidence, they moved on to the real challenge—writing on red paper with traditional ink. The classroom was filled with excitement as students carefully dipped their brushes and focused on each stroke. They were amazed at how beautiful their final pieces looked! Beyond learning the art of calligraphy, this activity helped them appreciate Chinese culture, especially the meaning of these characters in celebrating the Chinese New Year.

Today I had my first calligraphy lesson. I found it a little hard but I found it very fun. I leant how to write the Chinese character 春 (spring) and it was very easy! I had a good time!’

It was a very exciting experience and we all got to explore new things. My favourite part was when we got to write it on the red paper. I think calligraphy is both fun and challenging as we have to focus on writing the strokes correctly.

Today we had our first Chinese calligraphy lesson. We pracitsed writing the characters 福(fú), 春(chūn), 吉(jí ) on red paper. At first, it seemed pretty overwhelming and confusing, but then I ended up really liking it. I found it really fun. My favourite part was writing the different characters on the practice paper, as I got to try a couple of times. I think calligraphy is fun and relaxing because of how you move the brush smoothly.

During the calligraphy I was feeling calm as writing with the ink felt like painting. It was very entertaining and enjoyable. This is my first time doing calligraphy and I look forward to doing it again.

I learnt how to write Hanzi characters such as 福(fú) which means good luck, and when upside down it means good luck is arriving. I felt good and I had lots of fun practising and doing my final one. It was interesting to see a brush for the first time and being able to use it. I think I also got better at using the brush and making the right strokes. I totally think I would want to give calligraphy a try again. It was a very enjoyable experiences.

Last session we learnt about calligraphy for the Chinese New Year which was really fun. I learnt what Chinese people do in Lunar New Year and different Hanzi they put on their wall. The Hanzi that I made was福(fú), which means good luck. I really enjoyed it and I think we should do it again.

At first I found it a bit hard, but then I LOVED it. My favourite part was the magic paper. I think calligraphy is a very fun skill and once you’ve mastered it, it looks very beautiful. I like calligraphy because it’s very different.

Prisha 7E

At first I was worried and anxious but then I found that is rather relaxing and fun. Seeing the gold bits shining through the ink is one of my most favourite parts. Another thing I liked was the magic paper, I liked how it reacted with the water. The part I felt the most accomplished was where I has actually inked the red paper. In the end the Hanzi was really nice. I believe the Chinese calligraphy is relaxing because you are doing gentle brush strokes.

Sameeha 7E

I think calligraphy is a beautiful art passed through generations because it has a lot of stories to tell with each stroke of the brush.
