VTAC Course Applications for 2026 Now Open!

On Monday the 4th of August, our Year 12 students took their first big step toward life beyond school by beginning the VTAC course application process for 2026. This includes applying for university and TAFE courses, as well as exploring the SEAS (Special Entry Access Scheme) and scholarship opportunities available to them.

A huge thank you to Sue Clay for running an informative and inspiring pathways information night for our students and families. Her knowledge and support are invaluable during this important time.

If you were unable to attend, don’t miss out—book an appointment with Sue as soon as possible. As the saying goes, "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take." There are so many pathway options available, and Sue can help you discover the ones you might not even know exist.

As Dr Seuss wisely said, “You’re off to great places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting, so… get on your way!”

Let’s keep the momentum going, Year 12—your future starts now!

Year 10 English Excursion to the Melbourne Holocaust Museum

An unforgettable encounter with history, empathy, and the power of the human voice

On Wednesday the 6th of August, our Year 10 students took part in an impactful and deeply moving excursion to the Melbourne Holocaust Museum. As part of their English curriculum, the visit gave students the unique opportunity to engage directly with historical evidence, and immersive learning experiences. The day was both confronting and inspiring—helping students develop empathy, critical thinking, and a deeper understanding of history.

The centrepiece of the visit was a live testimony from Holocaust survivor John La Movie. Born in Paris in 1936 to a Polish Jewish family, John shared his personal story of survival, courage, and devastating loss. After the German invasion of France in 1940, John's father joined the French Resistance, while his mother and sister attempted to flee but were tragically captured and deported to Auschwitz. John and his father were later arrested in Lyon, under the Vichy regime, but John was saved by the brave actions of a French woman who hid him. His father eventually escaped captivity, and John lived in hiding with different relatives until the war ended in 1944. Sadly, most of his extended family—including his mother and sister—were murdered in concentration camps.

Hearing John's story first-hand was an incredibly powerful experience for our students. His quiet strength and ability to share such trauma with clarity and compassion left a profound impression on everyone in the room. It brought a human face to the historical facts and challenged students to reflect on the importance of memory, resistance, and moral courage.

In addition to the testimony, students walked through the museum’s historical exhibition. This walk-through allowed them to engage with real artefacts, personal belongings of Holocaust victims and survivors, photographs, and written testimonies. These tangible pieces of history gave students a greater sense of the human cost of genocide and the individuality behind every story. Each object and image deepened their connection to the lives that were lost and those who survived.

Students also spent time in the Education Centre, where they were guided through key historical evidence and documents. They worked with educators to analyse primary sources, propaganda, identity papers, and other materials used during the Nazi regime. This analysis helped develop their historical literacy and encouraged them to think critically about how societies are shaped—and how they can unravel when hatred and discrimination are allowed to grow.

The Melbourne Holocaust Museum’s mission is to amplify the voices of survivors as a catalyst for understanding, acceptance of difference, and the creation of a better future. This experience perfectly aligned with our students’ current English studies, where they are exploring different text types and writing personal response essays. By witnessing history through personal accounts and evidence, students are now better equipped to write with empathy, depth, and awareness of the power of language and storytelling.

More importantly, the visit encouraged our students to reflect on their own values, the importance of compassion, and the responsibility we all share to speak out against injustice. It reminded them of the importance of using their voices not only in their writing, but in their everyday lives—as future leaders who stand up for the dignity and rights of all people.

We are incredibly grateful to John La Movie and the Melbourne Holocaust Museum for opening their hearts, minds, and history to our students. It was an experience they will never forget.

Thanks for that! Here are the five outstanding quotes with the first reflection correctly attributed to Amali:

Ruby:“Personal testimonies play a role in helping us understand what they actually went through. Their artefacts, relics of the past and what they found necessary for their survival. Their books, poems, games and letters show that they were people the same as us. Just targeted due to their religion.”

Taylah:“It took a little bit to sink in that it wasn’t just a story tell and that this has happen and people had to go through this. As I stood there a rush of grief took over me just looking around and reading all the note about how the Jews were treated was unimaginable.”

Sam:“Hearing survivor stories firsthand deepened my understanding beyond what classroom learning alone can offer. It gave me a real look and insight on what it was actually like to be there.”

Year 10 Science

The Year 10s are studying Chemistry this term.  Last week, they investigated a combustion reaction, using magnesium and oxygen to create the ionic compound, magnesium oxide.  The fireballs that resulted from their reactions were very exciting!

VM Literacy

The Year 11 students have been exploring a range of social issues and the different perspectives people have on such issues. Jye and Kaitlyn have been out and about surveying staff and students to gain insight into their opinions on the current mobile phone policy at Charlton College. They then developed a speech and PowerPoint to present their findings to the class. Well done on your effort and engagement.

NCD Canteen - Friday 15th August

General Mathematics

General Mathematics students are well into their studies of Matrices. Over the past week they have been learning about transition matrices and how they can be used to predict into the future. The CAS is extremely useful in this unit, particularly when forecasting well into the future.
