LS3 JUNIORS
RE-INQUIRY TOPIC - TRANSFORMATION
This term we have been exploring the concept, ‘Transformation.’
Students have looked at materials around us and their observable properties. We have identified, sorted and manipulated everyday objects.
We discovered that materials can be combined to transform into new things. Last week we worked with flour, water and yeast and discovered these ingredients can transform to make bread.
We made predictions about how different materials could transform when combined. This week we have worked with flour, rubber balloons and funnels to make fidget toys.

WRITING GENRE – PROCEDURAL TEXTS
In writing we have been looking at the procedural writing genre using examples such as recipes and assembly instructions. This week we have written about making chemical reactions. We have focussed on writing including the equipment, steps and conclusion of a procedure as well as drawing and labelling diagrams.
Chan, Lashon, Akindu and Rayanna have drawn some diagrams and labelled them. Olivia and Meghan have shown how to include steps in our procedures.
Have a look at our wonderful effort!

Learning Space 3:
Transformation, Procedure Writing and AE at the Yarning Circle
Term 3’s Integrated Curriculum units are moving on with a bang in LS3 Seniors as students jump into the occasionally-explosive inquiry of transformation and change.
This theme links in perfectly with the Senior’s current focus on Procedural Writing, as students can explore the chemical reactions within the format of scientific reports.
In Clinic 3, students wrote the procedure of mixing together vinegar and bi-carbonate soda whilst hypothesising which ratio of vinegar to bi-carb would make the most effective chemical reaction.
Clinic 1 greatly enjoyed mixing mentos with fizzy drink to create absolutely volcanic procedures, and Clinic 2 have some exciting plans ahead that will have them foaming at the mouths - mouths of the equipment, not the students (hopefully!).
During Inquiry, students explored the organisation of molecules and properties of liquids, solids and gases through interactive and immersive activities. As an inadvertent by-product, the liquid of PVC glue becoming solid quickly created some sticky-finger situations!
Fortunately, we were well-equipped with sunny weather and the next experiment - involving melting ice - to help us clean up. Students enjoyed comparing the melting rates of different environments to ambient room temperatures as they drew the melting ice molecules transforming into water.
Lastly, Home Group AE was blessed to experience a reverent encounter with the Yarning and Prayer Circle this term, choosing three colours to represent mind, body and spirit as they delved into a meditative mandala. Chill morning air and peaceful music enabled the students to relax into a calm and alert state as they communed with their inner, reflective experiences of God.

SFS AFTER SCHOOL AUSKICK PROGRAM IS BACK!
Our SFS Auskick Clinics started last Wednesday August 20th from 3.20 pm – 4.20 pm. The students who were there had a great time learning lots of new AFL skills. They learnt to kick, take a chest mark and a high mark.
There are four sessions left, so If you would like your child to attend, please use the QR Code on the flyer to register your child. This will be the last chance for you to register your child. No registrations will be accepted after the next session.
TERM 4 SWIMMING
Thank you to all the parents who have completed the swimming Operoo form. If parents who have not completed it, could please do so as soon as possible as I will need to provide Casey Race with final numbers.
A swimming ability form will be sent home for all prep students and any new students enrolled this year. Casey Race has records for the students that attended last year. If you receive an ability form please complete this form and return to your child’s home group teacher as soon as possible. These will be passed onto the pool so that students can be placed into their initial groups. Students will be further assessed in their first swimming lesson.
Parents who have volunteered to assist the juniors, I will be checking that your Working with Children Check is current and registered with the school office. I will then be in contact with you prior to swimming beginning.
Swimming timetables have been uploaded onto the Operoo permission form as an attachment. Please print it off and ensure you have it available at home. Parents please note you are welcome to attend Casey Race to view your child’s lesson but photographs and videos are not allowed and only parents I have contacted will be able to assist in the junior change rooms.
A reminder to parents that swimming is an important part of the PE curriculum and all students are expected to attend. It’s imperative that students know how to keep themselves safe around water. If there is a medical reason your child cannot attend, you will need to provide a medical certificate for your child to be exempt. They will then remain at school in another Learning Space.

SWAP
As part of our SWAP sessions, we are focusing on the Respectful Relationships program Topic 5 which explores Stress Management.
In our sessions we have discussed how stress can feel different for everyone like butterflies in the tummy before something new, shaky hands when faced with something scary, or disappointment when things don’t go as planned. Students shared their connection to positive stress like the moment before going on a big rollercoaster or playing in a Grand Final.
We are highlighting the fact that it’s normal for people to feel differently about the same situation, and that all feelings are valid. Through supporting students to understand what it means and what it feels like, we are developing our understanding of different ways that we can cope with stress that is healthy.
With the Junior students Stress is defined as “what a person feels when they are worried or feel uncomfortable about something. Sometimes people feel stressed when there is too much to do, or when something is hard, scary or new for them”.
With the Senior students Stress is defined as “what a person feels when they are worried or feeling uncomfortable about something challenging in their environment. Stress can be positive. People can be excited and engaged in challenging situations. But we often use the word stress to refer to the negative feelings we have about challenges we experience. Stress can be a response to one single challenging experience, or it can be the build-up over lots of smaller or long-lasting challenges.
Here are some examples from the Juniors of different strategies that they could implement when feeling stress.
