ELC

At Oakleigh Grammar ELC, our HARK values, Humility, Aspiration, Respect, and Kindness are embedded into everyday learning. Recently, our Pre-Prep children had the exciting opportunity to put these values into action during a visit from the First Aid Superhero. They practised showing kindness and care when helping others, developed an awareness of safety, and understood the importance of seeking help in an emergency.
The First Aid Superhero program offers a fun and interactive introduction to first aid and personal safety. Through hands on activities and engaging role-play, the children learnt how to recognise emergencies, call 000, and place others in the recovery position, all while applying HARK values in real-life situations. Experiences like this bring our values to life and support children to grow as compassionate, confident, and caring learners.
We also celebrated Book Week! Families were invited to join their child’s class for morning story time, sharing the joy of reading together. The children loved bringing along their favourite books and dressing up as beloved characters, making it a colourful and engaging celebration of literature.

Bluebell
In the Bluebell class, we have been exploring the importance of healthy eating, with a particular focus on the variety of fruits and vegetables available to us. Together, we created a colourful fruit and vegetable rainbow, which highlighted the wide range of produce we can enjoy. As part of our learning, we read the story Stone Soup, which inspired us to make our very own vegetable soup. The children enthusiastically prepared the ingredients, carefully chopping the vegetables with support from their educators. We even included fresh produce harvested from our very own ELC vegetable garden! The result was a delicious soup that everyone thoroughly enjoyed.
In the lead-up to Book Week, we read the story The Potato People. This story complemented our focus on vegetables as we explored the life cycle of a potato, before creating our very own Potato People!

Eucalypt
As part of Book Week, the children in Eucalypt had an exciting time creating bookmarks and puppets. The highlight of the week was a thrilling bear hunt! The morning began with a reading of We're Going on a Bear Hunt, followed by an outdoor obstacle course in the backyard. The children developed their physical skills by zigzagging along tape, climbing monkey bars, balancing on beams, jumping through “mud,” and crawling into a cave. Their adventure ended with the exciting discovery of a baby bear hidden inside the cave. It was a fun-filled experience that left the children buzzing with excitement and joy.

Waratah
In the Waratah room, we have been investigating a variety of zoo animals and their habitats. Together, we are exploring the different environments these animals might need to survive. As part of our learning, the children are using air-dry clay to carefully sculpt their own zoo animals, contributing to the creation of our very own ‘Waratah Zoo’. Through this project, we are also engaging in numeracy experiences, counting animals, sorting them by size or habitat, and making comparisons, while continuing to build literacy skills by recognising animal names and practising writing our own names with growing confidence.
Alongside this, we have been learning about the different emotions we may feel throughout the day. We have been developing our ability to recognise these emotions and exploring strategies to manage them in healthy ways. With an emphasis on understanding that it’s okay to feel a range of emotions, we have been reading stories like ‘The Colour Monster’ in the lead up to Book Week, continuing our journey of emotional discovery.
