Debating

The energy for the final round of the interschool debating competition at Wesley College was electric! We had no spare seats in the bus, as several non-debating friends joined our six teams to research and support in any way they could.

We have had a great season, with five of six teams having more wins than losses – but the finals system is brutal – with only the undefeated teams progressing to regional finals. For the third year in a row, we had a team in the hunt…

Our Year 9 students debated AGAINST the proposal that it should be optional to complete the Census in Australia. They focused on the importance of accurate information, civic duties, and the shortcomings and costs of any other alternatives. One team won, and the other was beaten. A great effort from first-timer Kosta who tied (with experienced teammate Chrisanthy) for a Best Speaker Award in their victory.

Our Year 10 students also took the negative side of their debate, that the Australian government should prioritise tourism as Australia's main export. They reminded the audience that the government should serve local residents first, and used other countries whose economies collapsed after COVID as examples of when too much investment in tourism leaves countries vulnerable. Again we had one win and one loss, with Irene picking up the Best Speaker Award.

Our Year 11 teams (on 4/4 and 3/4 wins respectively) received the secret topic “That Youtube should not be included in the social media ban for Under 16s” one hour before the debate. They prepared, without devices, and then took on the reigning champions Mazenod. It was excellent, especially Nathanael’s closing arguments. It was close... But Mazenod, with their amazing third speaker, got us by a few points just like they did last year – arrggh!!

The Oakleigh Grammar debating culture is excellent and continues to grow - I am INCREDIBLY proud of this group.

Many thanks to all those who supported the team throughout the season, especially Mr Joyce and Mr Dickinson, and those who have come to step in and/or watch us do our thing: Ms Hallam, Mr Ryan, Mr Robertson and Ms Jackson.

We now move back on campus for the Interhouse Debating Competition, with the Grand Final and some special presentations scheduled for Week 7’s assembly.
